Don’t Stay Home This Weekend 10/05

It’s Friday! You know the drill! Here are the #DCmusic shows we’d like you to see all weekend long.

Friday 10/05:
The new upstairs venue at H Street’s Dangerous Pies has great sound, a beautiful roof deck and also duh PIES. Tonight two of our fave new DC music discoveries, beautiful synthpop Mystery Friends and corporate indie rock Tired All The Time, share the stage with each other and their hearts with you. No cover charge means more $ for PIE!

Saturday 10/06:
If you are a beloved listener of our podcast, you are probably just as excited as we are to hear the brand new album Trains and Moonlight Destinies by gypsy brass funk band Black Masala. Saturday night the CD release party rages at Pearl Street Warehouse with support from My Son The Hurricane.

Sunday 10/07:
You always know what to expect at Slash Run: good burgers and good rock n roll. Sunday night you can catch two hometown bands, Nice Breeze and Frend, along with Boston’s Zip-Tie Handcuffs.

SHAED – Melt

Props to dreamy pop group SHAED for the recent release of their sophoromore EP Melt. Yesterday Vice’s i-D site premiered the title track’s video, again crafted by director Max Haben who delivered the first video for “Silver Knife”. The song references singer Chelsea Lee’s short lived solo career on a major label at a young age, a sore subject she now tackles as a close knit family trio with her fiancé Spencer Ernst and his twin brother Max. The video’s setting at a derelict factory in Charlottesville echoes the apprehension of the song, but we particularly like the song’s beautiful dénouement in a field at sunset. Hey SHAED, how about giving us a peaceful ambient album next?

Be Steadwell – New Girl

It’s been a red hot second (almost a year actually) since queer pop singer Be Steadwell uploaded one of her solo vocal looping songs on YouTube. Good things come to those who wait, and now we have this sultry one-take version of the rebound love story “New Girl”, from 2017’s cathartic album Breakup Songs, shockingly available for whatever price you want on Bandcamp. Yo Be: How about a Bandcamp roundup of these YouTube versions? Steadwell plays next at City Winery’s Wine Garden on Monday October 15th, opening for Alana Davis.

Don’t Stay Home This Week 10/01

Welcome to October! You won’t be as excited to begin a new month until next April. While the weather remains warm, clear and unusually perfect, why not get out of your house and go to some shows?

Monday 10/01:
Clarendon’s Galaxy Hut is quite often king of Mondays for DC music. Tonight the indie beer bar hosts two new bands, feminist rock band The OSYX and sludgy punks BOAYT, plus legendary Inner Ear Studio head Don Zientara.

Tuesday 10/02:
Two shows got combined into one (double booking perhaps?) at Slash Run on Tuesday night. The overstuffed five band bill now includes two powerful DC acts, blue-haired Elizabeth II and loud punk from The Sniffs.

Wednesday 10/03:
We understand a couple of you missed the insane performance by DC’s dance punk powerhouse Light Beams at our Kennedy Center Millennium Stage last month. They’re back in town and tour tight, playing a free set Wednesday evening at SongByrd’s Vinyl Lounge in AdMo, supporting Lotion Princess and Cincinatti’s Leggy.

Thursday 10/04:
The countdown is on for the final shows at the Black Cat‘s intimate Backstage space. This Thursday night the legendary but doomed room hosts beloved crooner Seán Barna and delightful indie rock band Milo in the Doldrums, plus touring Atlanta band The Head.

Don’t Stay Home This Weekend 9/28

Well that was a hell of a week, right? Let’s release some of that tension this weekend with some #DCmusic. Here are our picks!

Friday 9/28:
A night of righteous feminist punk music from Hemlines is just the thing DC could use tonight. Sadly it’ll be the last one we get, as the powerful quartet calls it a day after their farewell show at the Black Cat. Perfectly paired opening band Bacchae scratches the same itch.

Saturday 9/29:
It’s an embarrassment of riches on Saturday night, with too many fantastic options to pick from. We’re giving our nod to the positive dance vibes from the Afrofunk big band Chopteeth at Georgetown’s Gypsy Sally’s, with long time ska vocalist Caz Gardiner opening.

Sunday 9/30:
Damn, the Black Cat Backstage has been absolutely killing it with great DC music billing recently. There will be a big hole to fill when this space closes later this year. Sunday night‘s lineup of dream rock band Cigarette, future soul & funk vocalist Dreamcast, and ambient craftsman IMKA (formerly Flash Frequency) is truly inspired and not to be missed.

Astra Via – U Don’t Wanna Know

WORLD PREMIERE!

Good news DC, Astra Via are back in action! If you’re not familiar with the name, perhaps you are already familiar with its members, Jarrett Nicolay aka My New Mixtape and Olivia Mancini. Mancini usually rocks out hard with her Mates but collaborating with Nicolay imparts an electronic pop spin on her unmistakable voice. After a series of excellent EPs back in 2012-2014, the collaboration went dormant as other projects rose to the fore. We kicked off 2018 with Astra Via’s surprise return doing a delightful cover of “This Will Be Our Year” by the Zombies. Now we are thrilled to premiere the music video for their new original single “U Don’t Wanna Know”. Local artist George Fox directed the video, providing Soviet propaganda imagery to accompany the song about life in Russia. The band has this message to their fans old and new:

Hey Comrades! Astra Via has seen the future and it’s looking good if red is your favorite color and you prefer your wars served cold. Check out this cautionary tale as you enjoy our latest single.

GoldLink feat. Miguel – Got Friends

DMV superstar GoldLink just dropped a new music video for “Got Friends”, his first single following the hugely successful 2017 album At What Cost. Shot by Christian Sutton in LA, the video is actually a short film with occasional snippets of the song, eschewing the music video format even more than he has in the past. Without spoiling anything, the film begins like an outtake from the currently airing David Simon drama The Deuce, but then takes a sudden turn towards another popular HBO show.
