Blacklodge + em.g – Unknown

Did you ever play around with the iTunes Visualizer? Back in the day, before we all gave up managing messy libraries of MP3s in favor of all-you-can-eat streaming, Apple’s flagship desktop music app contained a cool feature to generate trippy video controlled by the audio. I much preferred watching that to angry pundits or reality shows. Modular synth devotee Blacklodge (not so secretly DCDIT’s Alex Tebeleff) and vocal collaborator em.g (Margaret Gilmore) expand on that tradition with the new music video for “Unknown”, the long finish of their recent EP Will You Be Reduced from Blight Records. Baltimore based electro-acoustic composer Rob Neubauer delivers some remarkable abstract visuals that deserve viewing on a large screen TV. Blacklodge + em.g open for Kelly Lee Owens at Union Stage this Sunday night.

Loi Loi – You May Be

The title of Loi Loi‘s debut EP Viva La Vulva came from a pithy sign spied by singer Kristie Di Lascio at last year’s Women’s March in DC. The release of the EP’s third music video for “You May Be” displays impeccable timing as the #MeToo campaign evolves and the second annual Women’s March swept social media this past weekend. The song’s production drips with vintage late 80s goth-y synthpop from Depeche Mode and early Nine Inch Nails, while the video from Blight Records visual director Jen Meller casts Kate Ida and beloved DC expat Seán Barna in a blood red subterranean club full of tension and furtive looks. Someone resurrect MTV’s 120 Minutes again and get this video on it.

Loi Loi – Trying To Remember

Did you miss Loi Loi‘s new music video premiere over the Thanksgiving weekend? For shame. Kristie and her sibling Johnny Fantastic put out an excellent 5 song EP called Viva La Vulva on Blight Records, and just finished a whirlwind US tour to promote it. The new music video for “Trying To Remember”, directed by Blight’s chief visual artist Jen Meller, puts the focus on Kristie’s striking face as a horror-flick worthy synth riff propels her on foot through the woods by day and the city by night. Loi Loi plays twice this weekend, first Friday night at Slash Run with The Artist Formally Known As Vince Band and Haarpo, and kicking off a night of DC music at house venue The Castle on Saturday night with Sheila, Laurel Rose and Ezra Mae and the Gypsy Moon, so pick your poison now.

Stronger Sex – Hassle

The 80s are strong with this band. Channeling the best of synthpop from that era, Stronger Sex are crooning their way across the country now, on tour with Hudson K for their “No More Battles of the Sexes National Tour”. The duo of Johnny Fantastic and Leah Gage tease the release of their new album There Is No Stronger Sex on BLIGHT Records with a new single called “Hassle”. We reveled in the nostalgia for 80s neon, diner burgers and arcade games in this gorgeous animated video from director Ian Mcdermot.

Loi Loi – Responsabilidades

The newest addition to Ben Schurr’s ever-expanding Blight Records empire is Loi Loi, the synthpop project led by Kristie with support from her sibling Johnny Fantastic, primarily of Stronger Sex. The five songs on Loi Loi’s boldly titled debut EP Viva La Vulva represent a poppy, rave-y turn for the often abrasive and challenging material in the catalog of Blight Records, and we think a little fun is just what we need right now. The bilingual EP’s first Spanish single “Responsabilidades” feels like a 90s acid warehouse party throwback in the best way, and the video by Blight’s visual director Jen Meller makes us want to dance at our desks. You can get down properly to this at the EP release show tonight at Songbyrd along with Park Snakes and Philly’s Thrills.
