Asheru – No Matter Where You Go video

Hip-hop MC Asheru continues his worldwide DC ambassadorship with this new music video “No Matter Where You Go”. Ethiopian-American singer Wayna adds smooth flavor to Ash’s calm and assured delivery on this thoughtful and positive track from the 2013 album Sleepless In Soweto. The lush, colorful visuals come from Asheru’s tour stops in Costa Rica back in August, shot by Federico Peixoto of Gafeto TV Producciones.

Podcast with Chunky Glasses

chunky glasses logo

Need more of Paul & Tony talking about the DC music scene? We recently stopped by the production studios of the Chunky Glasses Podcast, a.k.a. “The Basement”, to detail our origin story and thoughts on the current DC music scene. Chunky Glasses, our brothers in podcasting, focus on both local and national acts with learned criticism from the likes of DCist music editor Tori Kerr, WRGW programming director Quinn Myers and head honcho Kevin Hill. Their episode interviewing The Cowards Choir was a fantastic listen.

Tereu Tereu – Spanish Lynx video

Tereu Tereu‘s Ryan Little created the visuals himself for the melancholy electronic track “Spanish Lynx”, the wrap up song from TT’s 2013 excellent album Quadrants. Yesterday Little’s occasional publisher the Washington City Paper premiered the abstract, washed-out video, filmed on Little’s HTC Thunderbolt phone. Tonight Tereu Tereu kicks off a refreshingly diverse lineup at the Black Cat mainstage with The Deadmen supporting the CD release event for instrumental heavyweights Black Clouds. Get there early!

Wanted Man – Pardon Me If I Stare video

This week seems to belong to Wanted Man. The bluesy garage rock group released their debut self-titled EP (name your price download!) just in time for their show tonight opening for Natural Child at the Black Cat. And today our compatriots at DC Music Download posted a ripping 3 song live set captured live at Thomas Orgren’s Persona Non Grata studio. Is everyone paying attention now? Here’s their newest music video for “Pardon Me If I Stare”, directed by Michael Hindert.

The Walking Sticks – One Sweet Thing video

The video we’ve all been waiting for is here! Yesterday young dream poppers The Walking Sticks unveiled the product of their recent live video shoot for “One Sweet Thing” at DC9. Superfans learned the choreography for the song from YouTube and wore fuzzy Silent Disco-esque headphones to show off their moves on stage. The result is goofy, sometimes awkward and contains a surprising amount of ass (worker bees beware!) for the sweet and fluffy song from their newest EP Pop Dreams, now freely available for your downloading pleasure. Don’t miss the EP release show this Saturday night at Rock & Roll Hotel with PLOY and Lean Quatifah.

Q&A and Song Premiere with Fellow Creatures

by Tony Porreco

Fellow Creatures 1

In September of 2013, Ugly Purple Sweater decided it was time to call it a day. Over the course of the group’s 4 years of activity and 3 releases, Ugly Purple Sweater consistently impressed listeners with their appealing blend of bouncy indie folk and commanding vocal performances from songwriter Sam McCormally.

Following the band’s conclusion, McCormally spurred curiosity by signing up to do a stint on bass for Paperhaus, performed solo frequently and above all, said nothing of when or if he’d begin a new full band project. Fast forward to this past August when a new group called Fellow Creatures made their presence known with a single Bandcamp demo and an 8 bit image of McCormally and Ugly Purple Sweater guitarist Will McKindley-Ward. Reminiscent of mid-career Talking Heads and the David Byrne/Brian Eno album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, the track (“Shuka Shuka”) features a funkier vibe than most anything in UPS’ catalog.

With only two public performances and a single available recording, we were eager for the opportunity to sit down with McCormally and McKindley-Ward to learn more about the new band before their headlining show this Saturday 11/22 at DC9. In keeping with everything that’s “new” about the band, Hometown Sounds is proud to premiere the very first finished & polished track by Fellow Creatures.

The Very Small – Said and Done video

What’s not to love about a hot dose of melody-driven power pop? Despite their name, The Very Small deliver big time catchy riffs and sweet harmonies on “Said and Done”, the first single from their sophomore album Zoomed Way Out released earlier this year. Robin Smith and Aaron Mann channeled their love of 90s rock into their first self-titled album back in 2009, then went on hiatus after the departure of an original band member. Adding bassist Zack Berman brought the band back to life, and now they complete a short tour through Brooklyn and Baltimore with a hometown show this Sunday night at the Velvet Lounge in DC with Model Stranger and Time Columns. Check out this joyous music video PREMIERE for “Said and Done”, easily capturing the essence of having fun and rocking out with your friends. That’s what being in a band is all about.

SmCity – New Spiritual video

One of the biggest cliches of living in DC is the first question asked when meeting someone new: “So what do you do?” It’s easy to think that everyone here lives for their day job to an unhealthy degree. Most people ask that question to discover if you’re important enough to network with, but I find that asking “What do you do after your day job?” leads you to the truly interesting folks: actors, writers, musicians and dedicated bloggers (heh). If we’re lucky, we don’t hate our day jobs too much. On rapper Simeon “SmCity” Booker’s new single “New Spiritual” featuring BJ the Chicago Kid, he rhymes about the daily grind of the day job and the struggles of ex-cons who have hurdles to landing one. SmCity’s new full length album Empire Falls drops December 3rd on Twenty20 Music & Films, and you can preorder it now for only $5.
