Typefighter – You When You’re Older video

DC music video of the day! Tonight you won’t want to miss a fantastic folk-rock show at the Black Cat with out-of-towners Plume Giant and locals Ugly Purple Sweater and Typefighter. Today’s video comes courtesy of the late & lamented SocialStudies DC blog, for the soon-to-be-released Typefighter song You When You’re Older. The video comes from last winter in the secluded Montrose Park in Georgetown.

To promote tonight’s show, Ugly Purple Sweater and Typefighter both covered a song written by the other band, and released the results as a free download on Bandcamp.

See you there tonight!

Black Cobain – Cheers video

DC music video of the day! Black Cobain, signed to Wale’s Board Administration label, is a DMV rapper on the rise. Today’s video is the title track from his recently released free mixtape Cheers. The visuals may come from London, where Cobain is working with Mark Ronson, but the sound is definitely DC.

Justin Jones – Miracles video

DC music video of the day! Justin Jones has been plying his radio-friendly Americana rock in this town for a number of years now, previously fronting his band The Driving Rain and now going solo under the wing of the 9:30 Club’s record label. The slickly produced video for Miracles, from his brand new album Fading Light, could finally bring much-deserved wider attention to this local talent.

Drop Electric – Robot Funeral video

DC music video of the day! Drop Electric are scheduled to play a set at Artomatic in Crystal City tonight at 10 PM. And that sounds like a great excuse to me to run another fantastic video by these soundscape shoegazers. Today’s video for the awesomely named song Robot Funeral was released last summer, and the track should find its way onto Drop Electric’s forthcoming album. Happy Memorial Day everyone!

America Hearts – A Whole Lotta Love video

DC music video of the day! Indie poppers America Hearts are back at the Black Cat tonight with the second installment in their Singles Club series, with local friends The Cheniers and Dot Dash. We featured the video for Lose You from the first single last month, and today we’ve got the video for A Whole Lotta Love, from the second EP Messy.

And there’s a bonus video too! Check out this cute little introduction to the Singles Club series. The brief footage from last year’s Fort Reno show gets me pumped for the summer!

All Good Funk Alliance – Slingshot Boogie video

DC music video of the day! To many, Memorial Day is a time for BBQs and tubing trips on the Potomac, but in the city the annual tradition I love most is the Fort Knox Recordings takeover parties at U Street Music Hall. This year’s Funk 4 Peace throwdown Sunday night involves the Godfather of Hip-Hop Afrika Bambaataa, reggae rockers Nappy Riddem, an always awesome Fort Knox Five DJ set, and the debut live performance for long time dance party veterans All Good Funk Alliance. FKR just released the AGFA album Jacks of All Trades, and they are so excited about this record that they are giving it away at the club! Today we’ve got the video for the title track from AGFA’s 2009 EP Slingshot Boogie, on their own Funk Weapons label, featuring rhymes from Think Tank.

Vandaveer & SOJA videos

DC music videos of the day! Two great local shows tonight deserve a double video feature on Hometown Sounds. First up is folk troubadors Vandaveer, part of a truly fantastic lineup tonight at the Black Cat with fellow locals The Beanstalk Library and Astra Via (Olivia Mancini from Washington Social Club and Jarrett Nicolay of Virginia Coalition). Their song The Great Gray comes from Vandaveer’s 2011 album Dig Down Deep.

The second video comes from the extremely popular reggae band Soldiers of Jah Army a.k.a. SOJA. They’ve worked hard over a long 15 year career to build a die-hard fan base that’s clearly shown in two sold-out shows at the 9:30 Club this weekend. Today’s video is the title track from their current album Strength To Survive.
