Tom Kim & Near Northeast – Greta

WORLD PREMIERE!

After a successful run in his Lost Origins Gallery solo art show Milk Relics, Tom Kim‘s short animated film “Greta” is now ready for a worldwide audience. Dedicated to the world-famous 16 year old Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, “Greta” is composed of over 1000 painstaking hand drawings, accompanied by the instrumental song “Cenote” from the 2015 debut album Curios by experimental folk group Near Northeast.

Hometown Sounds emailed with Kim and Avy Malik of Near Northeast to find out more about this collaboration.

Silo Halo – Casa Alta

Fans of the darker, moodier output of the Etxe Records label have waited 3 years for new songs by Silo Halo, the post-punk duo of Greg Svitil (Teething Veils) and label head Christopher Goett (Girl Loves Distorition). “Casa Alta”, the advance single from Silo Halo’s new self-titled album, presents a meditative desert road trip to Goett’s melancholy lyrics directed by Julie Goett. The avant-garde label celebrates its 10th anniversary by showcasing its current lineup of Silo Halo, Teething Veils, The Red Fetish and Near Northeast at Capital Fringe on Saturday January 20th, so RSVP now and don’t miss this impressive display of musical community.

Teething Veils – Webbed

“Webbed”, from chamber folk outfit Teething Veils‘s third and newest album Sea and Sun on Etxe Records, first surfaced as an entry in NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest early in 2016 and highlighted by us. Violist Hannah Burris’s soaring melody lifts up just as Greg Svitil’s dense lyrics need a moment for internal processing. The video from Zach Zimmerman and Michelle Morandotti of Ceramic Films partially obscures the musicians with nature’s overgrowth, but the song benefits from their musical presence on screen. Click Interested on the Facebook event for their next show at Comet Ping Pong on Friday December 22nd with Odetta Hartman and Owen Ross.

Near Northeast – Just Do Your Thing (Live)

Indie folk band Near Northeast have kept us waiting patiently for a new album after their auspicious 2015 debut Curios (still a pay-what-you-want download!). Yesterday the quartet of Avy Malik, Kelly Servick, Austin Blanton and Antonio Skarica announced they’ve signed to Etxe Records for their next pair of simultaneous album releases, True Mirror and Indali Variations 1-8, coming on May 5th. Etxe Records (pronounced et-CHAY) was formed in 2008 by members of the post-punk band Girl Loves Distortion and has released challenging acoustic music by Teething Veils, The Red Fetish and others. True Mirror is the more traditionally-shaped album coming to CD, while its companion Indali Variations 1-8 explores ambient variations on True Mirror‘s closing track, showing up on trendy cassette. Grab both physical releases at their dual album release show Friday May 5th at St. Stephen’s, and dig into this spirited performance of the new single “Just Do Your Thing” recorded live at House Studio earlier this year.

Teething Veils – Webbed (NPR Tiny Desk Contest submission)

Greg Svitil’s experimental project Teething Veils is in the studio now, finishing up their third record after 2013’s Velorio and 2014’s Constellations with excellent (and difficult to pronounce) local label Etxe Records. Svitil and violinist Hannah Burris set up at Saint Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Falls Church to deliver this live version of a new song called “Webbed” for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest. The shift from the droning post-rock and experimental sounds allows Svitil’s songwriting to come into focus here nicely.
