Peanut Butter – Slow Retreat Too

WORLD PREMIERE!

Peanut Butter, fka Peanut Butter & Dave, is the cross-country indie rock duo of Paul Bugala and David Diaz. On our #DCmusic Podcast this week we spun the catchy “Asteroid Negotiations”, the lead-off single from their almost-released new album Don’t Stop, produced by Devin Ocampo. Today we get to premiere the album’s second single “Slow Retreat Too”, with this music video from director Jon Lutz featuring an adorable tiger on a musical mystery journey through recognizable landmarks in DC and Silver Spring. Plus the drums on this track come from Renata Ocampo of Warm Sun.

Eagle-eyed fans (like us) might note that this looks identical to the video for “Asteroid Negotiations” premiered last month by the Ohio-based music blog Atlas and the Anchor. Bugala remarked, “Kind of an illustration of how viewers/listeners can create or ascribe different meanings from creative content depending on how it’s presented.”

You can pre-order the vinyl release of this album now on Bandcamp, or stop by DC area record stores Crooked Beat and Som Records to take it home now.

King Green – Similar

ICYMI, King Green of colorful rap-rock band RDGLDGRN has been quietly releasing solo singles to the streaming services over the last few years. His 2018 single “Similar”, calling out online trolls and our divisive American president, recently got this music video assembled by KG himself. The semi-lyric video mostly features Green’s deft bball dribbling with occasional punctuations from Michael Jordan. RDGLDGRN’s fall “Preseason Tour” lands in DC at Union Stage on Wednesday October 30th with Kash’d Out and headliner HILIE.

SHAED – Thunder

Electronic pop trio SHAED bounced from their “Trampoline” into the national spotlight, thanks to a lucrative feature from a well-known fruit company. Their newest single release is “Thunder”, an ominous rager written during the 2016 election that appeared on their 2016 EP Just Wanna See. This video from director Ryan Patrick sees singer Chelsea Lee chained by mysterious individuals while her hair grows to improbable and disturbing lengths. The whole thing feels like an abbreviated horror-thriller, cut off right before the cathartic climax. There’s still time to grab tickets to their North American tour’s hometown stop at the 9:30 Club on Tuesday October 10th.

Red Spells Red – Secret Sounds

WORLD PREMIERE!

We love premiering music videos, and we really love the sublime experimental ambient sounds under the banner of Verses Records. Red Spells Red is the duo of Dennis Kane, well known around these parts as The Hunted Hare, and Colorado’s Dave Svrjcek aka Acef Stripe. The accomplished instrumental musicians ditched their rock bands back in 2010 to push the boundaries of sound with improvised ambient soundscapes.

Coinciding with the digital release of their new album Secret Sounds on Verses, we’re honored to present the title track’s music video here. The creepy sonic textures pair with these dark, psychedelic visuals inspiring a search for meaning among unsettling feelings. “Secret Sounds” is an appropriate soundtrack to our turbulent times.

Sweet Something – So Natural

Here’s a little sweet something to brighten up your Tuesday. Jazz quartet Sweet Something features vocals and songwriting by newcomer Ariana Harbin. We featured a song from their debut EP In The Parlor on our podcast earlier this year, and their newest single “So Natural” shows the band evolving into a mature, nu-jazz groove courtesy of new drummer Aaron Ivey. The video for “So Natural” is a simple, sun-kissed jam on a DC rooftop that makes us want to hang on tight to those fading summer breezes. The full band plays next at Epicure Cafe in Fairfax on Friday September 27th with funk jam leader Gordon Sterling.

The Messthetics – Touch Earth Touch Sky

In advance of The Messthetics‘ sophomore album Anthropocosmic Nest dropping this Friday on Dischord Records, the instrumental trio released the album’s first music video “Touch Earth Touch Sky”. In case you’re new here, Fugazi’s drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally joined guitar wizard Anthony Pirog in 2016 to hammer out complex time signatures and wailing guitar solos on their debut self-titled album. “Touch Earth Touch Sky” shows a more melancholic mood akin to cinematic post-rock legends Explosions in the Sky, with a video from director Dan Sharnoff fitting the song’s vibe with manipulated tour footage through dark colored lenses. Trust us, grab tix while you can for The Messthetics’ album release show Wednesday September 11th at the Black Cat with Janel Leppin and Mock Identity.

Near Northeast & Takunda M. – Dardanelles

To craft a new album with their Nashville-based musical friend Takunda M., indie folk band Near Northeast retreated to two cabins in the Blue Ridge Mountains for focus and inspiration. The resulting album Cabin Sessions comes out August 23rd, and in advance you can and should fill your ears with the advance single “Dardanelles”. Near Northeast were smart to bring along their regular visual collaborator Kip Radt to film the sessions, as the setting is so damn gorgeous in this music video that you’ll need to get out of town and book a weekend there ASAP. Not THIS weekend though, because then you’d miss out on the album release show at new arts hotspot Cheshire in AdMo this Saturday. Hosted by arts event boosters PAKKE, the event features an art exhibit from Working Artists, a DC collective of visual artists who have created unique works of art based on a song of their choosing from the album. Come early to hear a discussion of the collaboration between visual and auditory artists led by Hometown Sounds podcast co-host & the guy who writes all the posts here, Paul Vodra. Get advance tix while you still can!

DC Music Rocks Festival videos

Even though drummer Brian Nelson-Palmer called time-out on his community radio show and podcast DC Music Rocks this year, his other initiatives as a dynamic supporter of DC music continue, most notably his annual August showcase at the 9:30 Club. This year the festival partnered with Luke Justin Roberts of Ivystone Records to produce live performance music videos of the five stellar and diverse show headliners: dance-rock band Iza Flo, Eli Lev‘s indie folk, punk rockers More AM Than FM, Latin “tropicaliente” Empresarios, and catchy pop-rock Sub-Radio. Crank this playlist and grab your tickets now for Saturday Night’s packed lineup!

Lisa Frank & Rez Ekbatan – Whisper (Outputmessage Remix)

Electronic dance music performer Bernard Farley, aka Outputmessage, has carefully crafted and curated visuals for his music that range from artsy to clubby. His newest is a radical departure showing Farley singing and performing to his recent remix of Lisa Frank & Rez Ekbatan‘s DJ single Whisper. He writes, “The song itself is already crazy, but to perform to it in a church meant a lot to me. The last time I performed in a church, I was closeted and afraid to be my true self. Now 22 years later, I’m in a completely different place as an artist where the main goal is to be the MOST myself. And so I couldn’t help but have some fun and be crazy and free on my own terms. My good friend and collaborator, Nigel Lyons, filmed the whole thing in one take! This one is not to be missed (look out for the reveal toward the end!)” We love it and can’t wait for more.
