Free Soil – Black

WORLD PREMIERE!

It’s been quite an intense week, right? The race for the Democratic presidential nomination winnowed down to the insurgent versus the establishment, the dreaded coronavirus haunts public gatherings and airplanes, and we all re-learn to wash our hands.

In the midst of all this, we’d like to introduce you to Free Soil, the new group on the experimental label Verses Records. Taking their name from a short lived political party in the early 1850s (motto: “free soil, free speech, free labor, and free men”), this anti-fascist, non-partisan band seeks to “provide documented demonstration in the form of audio/visual presentation both in media and live events”. For now, the quartet is withholding their identities to “prevent retaliation from government, state, corporate, and fascist entities who serve to provide false information in benefit of special interests”.

Their debut release “Black” is an absolute gut-punch on the fraught subject of fascism. An automated narrator iterates through the 14 Defining Characteristics of Fascism, documented years ago in an article by Dr. Lawrence Britt. The video, compiled under the Fair Use Act, showcases the dangers of our current political climate and bad actors. Eschewing monetary compensation, Free Soil endeavors for a grass-roots campaign to disseminate this powerful work, with downloads enabled through Vimeo or at this link.

Free Soil plan more releases soon with works concerning government and corporate corruption, gun violence, colonialism/imperialism, climate change, and current social issues. Their live presentation promises a sensory overload, incorporating gut rattling sonic dynamics, challenging video content and hypnotic strobes and lighting. Don’t miss them next on Wednesday March 18th at the VFW 9274 in Falls Church along with DC’s Luna Honey, Fix Your Hearts and NYC post-metal acts Kayo Dot and Psalm Zero.

Domingues and Kane – Instilled Regard

WORLD PREMIERE!

Hometown Sounds is honored today to complete the trifecta of music video premieres by multi-instrumentalist Dennis Kane through our friends at Verses Records. In September we helped unveil a new video by Red Spells Red, a collab between Kane and Colorado’s Acef Stripe. October saw a haunting spectacle from Kane’s solo moniker The Hunted Hare. Today we’re presenting “Instilled Regard”, featuring Kane and cellist/viola da gamba player Amy Domingues, also of the post-classical group Garland of Hours.

We last heard from Domingues and Kane on their debut full length album Gut + Voltage: Viola da Gamba & Electronics in Synthesis back in 2016. Their new 5 song release Rough Magick came out digitally today, and “Instilled Regard” is a welcome introduction to their distinct instrumental sound. The music video presents quaint Renaissance-inspired footage mixed with abstract imagery and patterns, reflecting the styles each bring to the eminent collaboration. As with all of Dennis Kane’s various projects, this is music deserving of thoughtful listening, accompanying peaceful seasonal contemplation.

The Hunted Hare – Margaret (I Thought I Heard Voices)

WORLD PREMIERE!

It was just a couple of weeks ago that Hometown Sounds premiered the newest music video “Secret Sounds” by Red Spells Red, Dennis Kane’s ambient collaboration with Colorado’s Acef Stripe. Ever the prolific musician, today Kane releases his third album Nocturne on Verses Records under his moniker The Hunted Hare.

We’re delighted to introduce you to the album’s first single “Margaret (I Thought I Heard Voices)”, and its colorful music video created by Kane himself. The songs on Nocturne are “inspired by the night”, channeling The Cocteau Twins and Italian movie soundtracks of the 60s and 70s. “Margaret” is a thoughtful Baroque-style instrumental suited for stylish late night cocktails and smokes. What are those mysterious voices saying? Buy that new album right now.

Red Spells Red – Secret Sounds

WORLD PREMIERE!

We love premiering music videos, and we really love the sublime experimental ambient sounds under the banner of Verses Records. Red Spells Red is the duo of Dennis Kane, well known around these parts as The Hunted Hare, and Colorado’s Dave Svrjcek aka Acef Stripe. The accomplished instrumental musicians ditched their rock bands back in 2010 to push the boundaries of sound with improvised ambient soundscapes.

Coinciding with the digital release of their new album Secret Sounds on Verses, we’re honored to present the title track’s music video here. The creepy sonic textures pair with these dark, psychedelic visuals inspiring a search for meaning among unsettling feelings. “Secret Sounds” is an appropriate soundtrack to our turbulent times.

Tristan Welch – Monday

WORLD PREMIERE!

“Workplace Tyranny”. “Fire Your Boss”. “Abolish Work”. Bold statements for buttoned-up, hard working DC. As we all know, when meeting someone new here, the common question asked is “So what do you do?” Ambient musician Tristan Welch suggests we leave our day jobs behind and find peace and fulfillment elsewhere. His minimalist, repetitive songs subtly evolve over time, rewarding meditative listening. Welch is a self-taught musician that always performs in suit and tie, in his words to “give the art the respect it deserves.” Welch works to spread the message that “we can only truly change what we have by withholding our labor, uniting as a working class to stand up against oppression. This is ambient music (drenched in reverb, delay and distortion) for the social consciousness.”

We’re quite proud to help premiere the music video for “Monday”, the lead off track from Welch’s fourth release 40 Hours on Verses Records. Visual artist Monica Stroik of Super!Silver!Haze! created this music video showing Welch holding up protest signs, as the background transitions from driving on 95 to the Washington Monument to a forest in Vermont.

The 40 Hours EP drops on February 22nd, but you should absolutely pre-order it right now to grab one of the limited edition 140 gram vinyl editions. Welch performs Saturday night at new DIY spot Dwell with Antonia, singer for punk band Mock Identity, and Coven Tree, the duo of strings players Hannah Burris and Alexia Kauffman. Mark your calendars for Welch’s 40 Hours release show on February 23nd at Mobius Records in Fairfax with Jake Reid of Screen Vinyl Image.

The Hunted Hare – Everywhere Green

WORLD PREMIERE!

Friday June 1st is a big day for Verses Records. The DC-based experimental label decided to drop two major releases on the same day. Known for their expansive 40-ish track benefit compilations, the first is VR, a modest 12 song split release with Liverpool’s Romeda Records, featuring Tag Cloud, James Wolf, DMLLL and The Hunted Hare. The second is the sophomore album Lost Wilderness by The Hunted Hare, the solo moniker of minimalist guitar wizard Dennis Kane.

On last year’s full length album Nothing Is Always, Kane established the tone of the project as melancholy and pensive, providing tenor and baritone melodies through cello tones and electronics. Lost Wilderness, despite its bleak title possibly referencing over-development and climate change, reveals a warmer, more summery vibe. “If there’s a theme to this recording”, Kane says, “it’s about balancing the needs of a peaceful inner life with the demands of living in a chaotic world”. Hometown Sounds is honored to premiere the music video of the album’s first single “Everywhere Green”, a soothing mix of heavily saturated nature shots with archival footage of dancing flapper women, slowed down and perfectly synced to the whispers of Kane’s pleasing melody. Mood is key with instrumental music, and Kane delivers a release worthy of turning off all the lights and letting it fully envelop you.

The Hunted Hare performs songs from the new album Sunday night at Bossa, opening the night for a collaboration between Ben Harbert (Los Angeles Electric 8) and Chris Hamley (Alarms & Controls, Circus Lupus) adapting 20th-century pre- and post-minimalist music to electric guitars, delay pedals and drum machine.
