The Hunted Hare – Lovely Secret

WORLD PREMIERE!

Since March of 2020, audio engineer and composer Dennis Kane’s solo moniker The Hunted Hare has uploaded no less than 5 albums of peaceful, dark and brooding music to his Bandcamp, with a sixth entitled Between Two Rivers dropping Friday June 4th. We spoke with Kane and his musical collaborator Amy Domingues earlier this year for the Luce Listening Party podcast, digging into his recording process and motivations for staying creative during lockdown.

Today we’re thrilled to get back into the music video game with a world premiere of the new single “Lovely Secret”. Kane’s layered instrumental guitar work lends itself well to soundtracks, and his music videos have demonstrated this well. The visuals of “Lovely Secret” fit the mood perfectly, with trippy red leaves floating behind a woman’s mysterious face. We love the commitment The Hunted Hare shows to the music video form, and are happy to cap off this string of excellent releases with this premiere.

The Hunted Hare – Margaret (I Thought I Heard Voices)

WORLD PREMIERE!

It was just a couple of weeks ago that Hometown Sounds premiered the newest music video “Secret Sounds” by Red Spells Red, Dennis Kane’s ambient collaboration with Colorado’s Acef Stripe. Ever the prolific musician, today Kane releases his third album Nocturne on Verses Records under his moniker The Hunted Hare.

We’re delighted to introduce you to the album’s first single “Margaret (I Thought I Heard Voices)”, and its colorful music video created by Kane himself. The songs on Nocturne are “inspired by the night”, channeling The Cocteau Twins and Italian movie soundtracks of the 60s and 70s. “Margaret” is a thoughtful Baroque-style instrumental suited for stylish late night cocktails and smokes. What are those mysterious voices saying? Buy that new album right now.

The Hunted Hare – Everywhere Green

WORLD PREMIERE!

Friday June 1st is a big day for Verses Records. The DC-based experimental label decided to drop two major releases on the same day. Known for their expansive 40-ish track benefit compilations, the first is VR, a modest 12 song split release with Liverpool’s Romeda Records, featuring Tag Cloud, James Wolf, DMLLL and The Hunted Hare. The second is the sophomore album Lost Wilderness by The Hunted Hare, the solo moniker of minimalist guitar wizard Dennis Kane.

On last year’s full length album Nothing Is Always, Kane established the tone of the project as melancholy and pensive, providing tenor and baritone melodies through cello tones and electronics. Lost Wilderness, despite its bleak title possibly referencing over-development and climate change, reveals a warmer, more summery vibe. “If there’s a theme to this recording”, Kane says, “it’s about balancing the needs of a peaceful inner life with the demands of living in a chaotic world”. Hometown Sounds is honored to premiere the music video of the album’s first single “Everywhere Green”, a soothing mix of heavily saturated nature shots with archival footage of dancing flapper women, slowed down and perfectly synced to the whispers of Kane’s pleasing melody. Mood is key with instrumental music, and Kane delivers a release worthy of turning off all the lights and letting it fully envelop you.

The Hunted Hare performs songs from the new album Sunday night at Bossa, opening the night for a collaboration between Ben Harbert (Los Angeles Electric 8) and Chris Hamley (Alarms & Controls, Circus Lupus) adapting 20th-century pre- and post-minimalist music to electric guitars, delay pedals and drum machine.

The Hunted Hare – Mild Horses

Some of DC’s best musical exports these days are thoughtful ambient and post-classical pieces, and homegrown label Verses Records leads the way. After last year’s excellent collaboration with viola da gambist Amy Domingues entitled Gut + Voltage, Dennis Kane delved into his own solo project of minimalist looped solo guitar. Mirroring his own bout of depression that perhaps many of us also felt over the last year, Kane produced the full length album Nothing Is Always. Verses Records releases the album Tuesday June 27th under the moniker The Hunted Hare, and last week premiered this music video for the melancholy track “Mild Horses”. As with much in this genre, meditative patience is rewarded.
