Typefighter – You When You’re Older video

As a musician, it’s not easy to keep things fresh over time. Perhaps you join a new band that sounds nothing like your original band, like Typefighter‘s frontman Ryan McLaughlin playing guitar in the hardcore band Joy Buttons. It could also be an evolution of a band’s sound. Typefighter had a mellower, folkier sound in their earlier EPs, 2009’s i want to see you game, boys, i want to see you brave and 2011’s fall winter fall. Our first taste of their louder, more powerful and garage-ier sound came last July at the 9:30 Club, and they were quite excited to get their new music into the ears of fans. Their new music video, You When You’re Older, provides an interesting way to hear the change directly. After watching the video, check out our post nearly 2 years ago to hear the same song recorded live for the late SocialStudiesDC blog. Grab their new full length album The End of Everything on April 22nd courtesy Huge Witch Records and your tickets to their release show May 3rd at Rock & Roll Hotel, with Shark Week, Teen Mom and Sunset Guns.

Furniteur – Modern Love video

Visual artist Brittany Sims‘s new music project Furniteur will appeal to fans of synthpop in general and BRETT in particular, as BRETT-ers Kevin Bayly and Mike Toohey produced the woozy, 80s-drenched debut track “Modern Love”. The new single, already hyped earlier this week by DC Music Download and Bandwidth, gets an extra push today with a music video assembled by Sims herself of footage of 80s technology and beautiful women, the chocolate to “Modern Love”s peanut butter. Look for Furniteur’s debut EP soon on Bayly’s Prince Georges Records, and make your way to The Dunes Saturday night for their first live show ever, supporting Pleasure Curses and the album release of post-punkers Cavale.

The Raised By Wolves – Freddy Freaker video

The Raised By Wolves started with two high school friends, drummer/vocalist Dusty Durston and guitarist Ben Eskin, coming together after college to craft powerful pop songs influenced by 90s pop radio. Their debut album Sadie Hawkins came out last summer as a free download, and subsequently the pair assembled a full band to perform live. I caught them at DC Music Download’s anniversary blowout at the 9:30 Club a couple of months ago and was definitely impressed. Yesterday PureVolume premiered their debut music video for “Freddy Freaker”, a surreal and meditative film helmed by new director James Robertson.

Paul Pfau – Happy To Be video

Singer-songwriter Paul Pfau enlisted a group of fans to shoot iPhone footage at his sold-out gig at the Bright Box Theater in Winchester, VA on February 8th, 2014. Ukulele master Don Kim assembled the footage into this fun video for the upbeat single “Happy To Be”, the title track from Paul’s Kickstarted 2013 album. After you get this catchy song stuck in your head, visit Unrehearsed DC to check out Paul singing another song, “Keep It Going”, in a way-too-clean bathroom at Iota, featuring circus-living advocate Justin Trawick.

Deleted Scenes – You Get To Say Whatever You Want video

The spastic and passionate post-punk quartet Deleted Scenes are poised to unleash their new record, Lithium Burn, on April 15th on New Orleans’ Park The Van Records. Singer Dan Scheurman was inspired by Occupy Wall Street footage to pen the song “You Get To Say Whatever You Want”, and tapped Pree drummer Ben Usie to craft a music video using those raw, powerful protest images. Check out Spin’s premiere for more background on the song and the video.

Uptown XO – Who video

The Arlington-based vinyl label Cricket Cemetery originally focused on punk releases, but I’m pleased that Ian Thompson’s musical tastes and ambitions are broad. DC rapper and Diamond District member Uptown XO is the latest to get the deluxe vinyl reissue treatment, surprisingly for his 2008 mixtape Takeover 2. To hype the summer release, limited to only 100 precious copies [cough cough PREORDER], the lyrically boastful track “Who” gets the music video treatment from Blakk House Films.

Redhead – Too Much video

Rapper Stephen Redhead continues his trend of self-reflection and lamenting negativity in his newest music video “Too Much“. The video begins with a tense conversation between Redhead and himself regarding his public perception, so hang on (or skip ahead) to about two minutes in for the beats and rhymes to flow. Look for Redhead’s EP Exxxactly to drop soon.

Amber Mimz – Take Off Your Kool video

Sultry R&B singer Amber Mimz tapped promiment online music publication Earmilk to premiere her new music video “Take Off Your Kool”. The video was shot in the gorgeous rural setting of New Windsor MD, and on this first day of spring I couldn’t be more excited for weather like this to arrive. Amber’s production chops are just as impressive as her sweet crooning, imploring us to relax and feel good about ourselves. Pick up Amber’s debut album The Life Of Riley, featuring this single, on her Bandcamp.

Johnny Fantastic – In The Summertime video

Our buds at DC Music Download premiered the debut music video from Johnny Fantastic today. Former Paperhaus bassist John Di Lascio went solo and released the demented funhouse indie rock album Bluebirds, Bluebirds, Bluebirds under the moniker last summer. The new video, constructed around the idea of a twisted tea party with raw meat cake, was shot and edited by Pree’s Ben Usie. Check out DCMD’s post to learn more from Mr. Fantastic himself.

Ex Hex – Hot and Cold video

Since wrapping up the brief but insanely catchy project Wild Flag with Carrie Brownstein, Mary Timony assembled a new band with drummer Laura Harris of The Aquarium and Besty Wright called Ex Hex, after the title of Timony’s third solo album in 2005. Ex Hex has generated a lot of excitement in the music scene recently, signing to Merge Records and blowing lids at SXSW last week. The 7″ single for “Hot and Cold” is out today, as is a brand new music video directed by Lara Gallagher, featuring Chain & The Gang’s Ian Svenonious and his luxurious mop-top in a dinner date ruined by the precocious band.
