BRNDA – House Show

BRNDA, the self-professed “Serious Band from Washington DC”, is back doing what they do best: releasing cassette tapes, touring far and wide, and promoting house shows. Bandmembers Leah Gage and Dave Lesser run the prominent DC house venues Bathtub Republic and 453 Florda, respectively, so naturally their new single “House Show” takes us through the glories of playing them, with misbehaving equipment, very friendly hosts and cool cool nights. If you were making a music video for this, would you include pics and video of some of the many many shows hosted by these distinguished individuals? Wouldn’t that make more sense than, well, potato chips? That’s exactly why Dave and Leah and Christian and Alex are in BRNDA, and the rest of us are sadly not. Pre-order BRNDA’s third release thanks for playing now before it drops on cassette March 30th courtesy Nashville’s Banana Tapes label, and wish them luck as their tour hits SXSW 2018.

Presenting BRNDA @ Millennium Stage

All of us at Hometown Sounds are totally excited to present BRNDA at our September #DCmusic showcase at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage.

BRNDA, a four-piece from DC, has been compared to Adam and the Ants, Parquet Courts and Pixies. Perhaps this panoply of cultural post-its is unavoidable at a time when all music is
listenable, always pilferable. BRNDA, like any honest band, admits to the plundering, but they do have a few rules: No covers, No love songs. Also, simple is always better. So if they have scoured the late 70s, 80s and early 2010s for musical detritus, they haven’t made off with just anything salvageable. No, only the least ostentatious, most off-kilter will do. And so, if you find yourself unable to put your finger on just what you’re hearing, it is because BRNDA is not just some rehashed comfort listening. Couple the music with the world-wary, at-times indecipherable lyrical meaning of the vocalists (they all sing), and you might begin to doubt yourself…but you might also enjoy it. This is exactly how BRNDA wants you to feel.

RSVP here and come to the free performance at 6 PM on Thursday September 7th!

BRNDA – Snacks

Sometimes Dave wears a dress. Sometimes Leah wears a tie. Sometimes Johnny wears a full suit. Sometimes Alex wears a totally sweet hot pink blazer. BRNDA infuses the post-punk aesthetic with a hugely welcome dose of wackiness, as balloons, streamers and painted banners cover the debut music video for “Snacks” and render the well-known DIT venue Paperhaus almost unrecognizable. “It’s a party!” Dave howls, and BRNDA’s high-energy performances always make it party-time, with or without snacks. BRNDA’s new album Year of the Manatee is out now on Babe City Records, and their next show is at the newly relocated Bathtub Republic on Saturday September 19th with Puff Pieces, Positive No and Teen Liver.
