Davy Fresh – No Hiding

We have photographer Yoggi Shields @yoggitheshooter to thank for the new music video from DMV rapper Davy Fresh, shot with unmistakeable landmarks on DC’s Black Broadway, U Street NW. The single “No Hiding”, from Fresh’s upcoming album Every Dark Night, features vocals with a laid back yet intense style and slick production from The Product, Fresh’s partner in the collective Fresh Kids Music Group alongside MioTiga and Blackmel. It’s almost 4/20 so hit up The Slow Burner to celebrate with Davy Fresh and his crew and lots of infused goodies.

Near Northeast – Just Do Your Thing (Live)

Indie folk band Near Northeast have kept us waiting patiently for a new album after their auspicious 2015 debut Curios (still a pay-what-you-want download!). Yesterday the quartet of Avy Malik, Kelly Servick, Austin Blanton and Antonio Skarica announced they’ve signed to Etxe Records for their next pair of simultaneous album releases, True Mirror and Indali Variations 1-8, coming on May 5th. Etxe Records (pronounced et-CHAY) was formed in 2008 by members of the post-punk band Girl Loves Distortion and has released challenging acoustic music by Teething Veils, The Red Fetish and others. True Mirror is the more traditionally-shaped album coming to CD, while its companion Indali Variations 1-8 explores ambient variations on True Mirror‘s closing track, showing up on trendy cassette. Grab both physical releases at their dual album release show Friday May 5th at St. Stephen’s, and dig into this spirited performance of the new single “Just Do Your Thing” recorded live at House Studio earlier this year.

Venn – Ceremony (New Order cover)

It’s a beautiful and warm Spring day outside, but are you sad and cold inside? Dreampop band Venn from Woodbridge has what you need today with a brand new music video covering “Ceremony”, the classic final single by Joy Division released under the New Order moniker in 1981 after singer Ian Curtis’s suicide. The song appears on Rave On, A Madchester Celebration organized by The Blog That Celebrates Itself, and you can grab it now on Venn’s Bandcamp in advance of their next live show opening for The Coathangers at DC9 on Tuesday April 18th.

Shooting Down Asteroids – Drown

Shooting Down Asteroids is very worried about our planet. The indie rock band initially formed in 2015 around singer-songwriter Carlos Martin Vizcarra and now includes a full lineup of guitars, bass and drums. Their name is clearly a reference to the somewhat maligned 1998 Michael Bay film Armageddon, which is still enshrined in the venerable Criterion Collection as a lauded classic. Their debut album Fine. Well..., entirely performed and recorded by Vizcarra, came out back in late 2015, but their new music video for the climate change theme song “Drown” is up to date with copyright-free footage from our government agencies NASA and NOAA and many pointed jabs at science-denying elected officials. Confrontational protest music like this is just what 2017 needs most.

Kirbie – Human

Kirbie Rose Parker showcases humble compassion and her sparkly style in “Human”, the first single from her just-released album Melon Soup. The music video, shot around the under-loved Rosslyn neighborhood in Arlington, embodies the sympathy Kirbie inspires with her lyrics, while a smooth groove flavored with soul and jazz propels the song along. This young singer-songwriter is one to watch!

Kingpen Slim – Disconnected

DMV rapper Kingpen Slim just won’t take the hint in his new music video for “Disconnected”, a bonus track from the Deluxe Edition of his most recent full length album Life After Doubt. Slim’s dark tale of lust that won’t let go is visualized by director Jay Gregory with help from Kacey Williams, singer for DC go-go band Black Alley.

Shy Glizzy – Congratulations

After his well-regarded mixtape Young Jefe 2 last year, DC rapper Shy Glizzy decided to rebrand himself as simply Jefe when he released an EP called The World Is Yours in early 2017, as a sign of maturity. However the EP’s first video, “Congratulations”, brings his moniker back to what we’ve known and loved for years. Which is it? Rebranding is hard, kids. Get your fill of money, babes and bling below.

Mountain Jew – While I Was Stuck In Jersey

What if the Front Bottoms were a ska band that liked doing covers of trap and pop-punk songs? Easy, then you’d get Takoma Park band Mountain Jew! We introduced the fine listeners of our biweekly podcast to these young party rockers back in January with “We Only Know What We’ve Been Told”, their contribution to The Art Takes Action Mixtape from VoidLife Records. Today’s music video for the melodica-heavy song “While I Was Stuck In Jersey” comes from their 2016 name-your-own-price release The Shooman EP. It’s awkward and charming and fun as hell, and I definitely want to learn all the words and sing along to this live. Mountain Jew’s full length album Mountain Jew Fails Gym Class drops in May.
