Pree – Shelf Life video

DC music video of the day! Here’s another great option for your mandatory Friday night local music outing: Pree plays at the underground venue Paperhaus with fellow local bands Paperhaus and Imperial China. Pree makes delightful folk-rock music fronted by the extremely distinctive vocals of May Tabol, formerly of the band Le Loup. DC has always had a lively underground and house venue scene, and if you’ve never been to see this type of show, often in a living room of an apartment or group house, you’re missing out on some of the most dynamic live music options around. The Tumblr site DC Showspace is your goto spot for all the DIY goings-on. This video for the song Shelf Life comes from Pree’s 2011 album Folly.

Countdown To Yuri’s Night 2012

Shameless self promotion! This Saturday night is the fantastic Countdown To Yuri’s Night party at the Artisphere in Rosslyn. This crazy party includes space-themed burlesque, The Atomic Mosquitos, local ska band Eastern Standard Time, and Chief Boogie Officer DJ P.Vo (that’s me!) I’ve DJed this party for years now and it’s always a blowout good time. I’m taking a break from the Hometown Sounds for this event to play a mix of mash-ups, nu-disco, funk and whatever else I feel like. Throw on your favorite costume and check this out!

Last December they remixed the song Half Crazy by former locals Jukebox The Ghost, from their 2010 album Everything Under The Sun, and they even made a video for it!

Chain & The Gang – Detroit Music video

DC music video of the day! Chain & The Gang is the latest band for “the other Ian”, Ian Svenonious. In case you’re just joining the DC music world, Ian Svenonious gained his punk cred fronting bands The Nation of Ulysses, The Make-Up and Weird War. He’s got a vocal style that’s completely distinctive, dubbed “Gospel Yeh-Yeh”, and his live performances are not to be missed. Lucky for you, Chain & The Gang is headlining a show tonight at the Black Cat Backstage, so do yourself a favor and get to know this amazing band. Here’s the video for Detroit Music, from their 2011 album Music’s Not For Everyone, on K Records.

The video for Ci’iy Life comes from Oddisee’s 2010 project Odd Winter, later remastered and repackaged with the other three parts as Odd Seasons. There’s definitely a lot more in this album than you’ll find in most DMV rap efforts.

Vegas With Randolph – Some Time To Live video

DC music video of the day! Vegas With Randolph is a power pop band that’s easy to love. They readily draw comparisons to pop acts Fountains of Wayne, Sloan and Fastball. They’d certainly be in heavy rotation on local FM radio, if only our local FM radio options catered to listeners and not major record labels. The band’s video for Some Time To Live, from their 2011 album Above The Blue, should strike a chord with anyone in DC who owns a car.
