Don’t Stay Home This Week 6/10

Hometown Sounds strongly encourages you to not stay home, because then you’d miss all this great #DCmusic.

Monday 6/10:
DC jazz great Samuel Prather leads the quartet version of his Groove Orchestra tonight in a free show at Ivy City Smokehouse in connection with the sprawling DC Jazz Fest, along with vocalist Akua Allrich.

Tuesday 6/11:
Garage and surf rock take the stage Tuesday night at Slash Run when DC faves Venray and Apollo 66 open for TN’s Mouth Reader.


Wednesday 6/12:
Some people love the lyrics most, and some love the music most and often can’t even make out the words. If you’re the latter, or you’re game to give the words a rest for a night, head to Evening Star Cafe‘s upstairs Majestic Lounge in Del Ray this Wednesday for ambient guitarist Tristan Welch and post-rock duo Ice Out.


Thursday 6/13:
The Smithsonian American Art Museum continues their prestigious and long running Luce Unplugged series highlighting the brightest in the DC music scene this Thursday with a special duo performance from Jess Eliot Myhre and Chris Ousley of the Bumper Jacksons.

Don’t Stay Home This Weekend 6/07

Don’t even think about staying home this weekend. Live music forever!

Friday 6/07:
For DIY house show enthusiasts, Dwell is one of the last remaining haunts in DC these days. Tonight the folky/indie rock vibes ring out with The North Country, Fiona Kohrman (ex of The El Mansouris), and Adele Marie & The Milkweeds.



Saturday 6/08:
The energy and drive behind the inclusive, feminist organization This Could Go Boom is infectious. Catch their disease Saturday night as their monthly showcase hits the Dew Drop Inn with Wicked Sycamore, Ms Fridrich‘s Sarah Flippert, Boss Company and When Particles Collide all the way from Bangor, Maine.

Sunday 6/09:
The only bar that matters in Arlington, Galaxy Hut saves Sunday night with two DC energetic indie rock bands, Trajectories and Pompeii Graffiti.

Thursday 6/06:
The bad news is that Loi Loi‘s globe-trotting front woman Kristie Di Lascio will soon depart DC for more far flung adventures. Catch her trademark diva style one last time this Thursday at the Pie Shop along with Lotion Princess and Stronger Sex.

Off-the-grid hotspot Dwell offers this lineup for your Wednesday night enjoyment: DC’s lovely indie pop Lotion Princess, gender-less VA neo-soul jazz duo Morning Sunshine, and Rochester’s Calicoco.

Thursday 5/30:
Thursday night‘s lineup at Dew Drop Inn‘s lower level gives you two loud, punk-adjacent bands that we recommend: Heavy Breathing and Des Demonas.

Friday 5/17:
Shamans of Sound, a new reggae band featuring DC music veterans, just released their third single “The Ultimate High” featuring Abhik Saha. Celebrate with them tonight at Tropicalia for their Friday Night Live party, with no cover charge.

Saturday 5/18:
Gypsy Sally’s in Georgetown has a fine night of funk Saturday night, featuring Aztec Sun and BOOMscat. Boom.

Sunday 5/19:
Soooo, Sunday night is the finale of a rather popular HBO series. Meanwhile Clarendon’s Galaxy Hut hosts 3 delightful indie rock bands that night, Little Lawnmowers from WV and two of our own, The Meer and Miss, Understand Me. The music starts at 10, which is pretty late for a Sunday but not late enough to watch the whole episode, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Monday 5/13:
Legendary DC producer and Inner Ear Studio head honcho Don Zientara plays AdMo’s Songbyrd tonight, along with Lisa Said’s rock band Piramid Scheme. No cover = buy some vinyl while you’re there.


Tuesday 5/14:
Jazz saxophonist and passionate go-go supporter Elijah Jamal Balbed joins 7DrumCity‘s FREE, Live & Local series on the patio at The Pub & The People from 6-8 PM Tuesday evening. The rain’s gotta stop sometime, right?

Wednesday 5/15:
AdMo’s Bossa is well known as a DC hub of global sounds. This Wednesday they host the Tributary Project, modeled after band lead JaJa Bashengezi‘s experiences in refugee camps across east Africa.

Thursday 5/16:
Any weekly show listing wouldn’t be complete without a couple of determined young indie rock bands supporting a touring act. The Pie Shop‘s Thursday night includes DC’s Friends of Friends and Lovejet, welcoming Dominy from Philly.

There’s some big shows and festivals hitting DC this weekend. We like to illuminate some more intimate #DCmusic shows worthy of your attention.

Friday 5/10:
Perhaps you heard our recent podcast takeover with Lilly from Erotic Thrillers and Javier from Spirit Plots. Devin Ocampo produced the new album by Spirit Plots, and his tight indie rock band The Effects joins Spirit Plots and Erotic Thrillers tonight at Slash Run to celebrate the ablum’s release and give away vinyl copies with every ticket!



Saturday 5/11:
The Funk Parade fills venues up and down U Street with bands Saturday night, but one lone showcase is far away from the traditional Black Broadway. Pianist and bandleader Aaron Abernathy, who we featured in our Millennium Stage series, brings a FREE taste of the funk to the Wharf’s Pearl Street Warehouse.

Sunday 5/12:
DC jazz site CapitalBop returns to Takoma Park’s Rhizome for their excellent monthly Jazz Loft series. This Sunday brings saxophonist Brian Falkowski, featured performer at Donvonte McCoy’s regular gig at 18th St Lounge, and percussionist Dan Kurfist who recently relocated here from NYC. Bring $10 for the performers and your instrument to jam into the wee hours.

Monday’s here, and it’s time to plan your week of hitting up live music. Here are our #DCmusic picks for the week ahead.

Monday 5/06:
Surfgazers Coral Benders, recently featured on our podcast, team up with Club Scout, powerful indie rock band featuring recent podcast guest host Javier Diaz, tonight at Slash Run. They host Baltimore’s Silent October and Minneapolis band Kiss The Tiger, touring to support their new album Let Me Bleed.

Tuesday 5/07:
The DIY spot Dwell really has captured the wayward underground house show energy in DC. Tuesday night the lineup at the red brick carriage house includes Lotion Princess, Weston Smith, Social Station and Philly’s Mavis the Dog.



Wednesday 5/08:
It takes some nerve to name your band Dentist, for obvious reasons. The touring NJ band hits the Pie Shop Wednesday night with support from two DC acts, The Countess and Olivia Mancini & The Mates.


Thursday 5/09:
Just look at this Thursday night bill at Dew Drop Inn. Bal Boheme. The Electric Grandmother. Jack On Fire. Baltimore friend Marian McLaughlin. Varied in genre, style and volume, this is quintessential and irresistible. Also, holy shit this flyer.

Now that we wasted so much of the weekend with Endgame and the Battle of Winterfell, how about cooling off with some live #DCmusic? Here are our picks for the week ahead.

Monday 4/29:
Underground hotspot Dwell hosts a four band indie rock bill tonight with two touring acts, Lost Dog and Cool Original, and two DC acts we recommend from our podcast series, Max Gowan and Spring Silver.


Tuesday 4/30:
Get an early taste of this year’s Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival this Tuesday night at Pearl Street Warehouse. Justin Trawick‘s long-running 9 Songwriter Showcase gathers musicians playing at Saturday’s festival, including Reed Appleseed, The October Sessions, Jess Eliot Myhre of the Bumper Jacksons, and more. But first, here’s Trawick and his trio The Common Good playing a new song called “These Days” in Pearl Street’s green room for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest.




Wednesday 5/01:
GoldPants Party wins the battle of Wednesday night with superhero Emma G and feisty synthpop diva Loi Loi. Get to Sauf Haus by 8 to see Emma G’s new music video for the latest single “Smile”.

Thursday 5/02:
Thursday evening the after-work showcase Luce Unplugged at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Luce Foundation Center presents soul and funk band Backbeat Underground, veterans of our Kennedy Center Millennium Stage series.
