STPP Fest Show Recommendations

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie Music Festival takes over a huge number of venues around town with mostly free shows by local and out of town bands. I’ve been helping out on the organizational committee for this festival and I couldn’t be more excited that it’s all coming together. Here are my picks for local bands worth checking out.

Friday

  • Indie rockers Paperhaus cap off the night at 1 AM at The Black Squirrel
  • Young punks The Black Sparks play at Columbia Station
  • Heaven boasts a tight & focused lineup of twangy rock with SweetBread Jim’s, The Torches & Typefighter
  • The WeatherVanes and The Highballers play back to back at Secret Lounge
  • We Were Pirates and Norman Rockwell play at Mood Lounge

Saturday

  • Former locals Zulu Pearls haven’t returned to DC in 3 years. Welcome them back at Secret Lounge
  • Presto Bando are definitely worth checking out at Mood Lounge
  • Young Rapids, fresh from recording a prestigous Daytrotter session in Chicago, play the Paw Tracks / Car Park Showcase at Comet Ping Pong

Sunday

  • Lost Civilizations is interesting experimental music at Mellow Mushroom
  • Do not miss Ugly Purple Sweater at Heaven. These guys (and gal) are great musicians and performers, and their show at Red Palace last weekend was PACKED!
  • Shoegazers Mittenfields play LOUD at Ghion
  • I’m happy to see some hip-hop represented at Old Dominion Brewery by Redhead and Ardamus

Here’s a masive Spotify playlist of lots of the bands playing at the festival.

Keep checking the schedule this weekend, there’s still a few TBDs to fill in and some reshuffling is expected. There’s a LOT going on around town this weekend, but only the STPP Fest has no advance tickets and almost no cover charges. Come check out some fantastic new music!

Nappy Riddem live videos

Hometown Sounds faves and Fort Knox Recordings artists Nappy Riddem play a show Friday night at the new venue Tropicalia on U Street NW, with support from longtime local jungle & dub DJ Slant. The duo of Rex Riddem and Mustafa Akbar made a music video for the soulful track One World Sovreignty from last year’s self-titled album that we ran as our second music video of the day, and perhaps you missed it back then. Check out the Occupy DC influenced video featuring DC rapper Asheru.

Last month they recorded a few songs at their live show at Jammin’ Java in Vienna. Here’s the brand new & unreleased I Wish:

And Devil Needs A Bodyguard:

Check out this free show Friday and give a wet sloppy birthday kiss to manager extrodinaire 2Tuff Andy!

The Lost Rivers – All Dead (Screen Vinyl Image Remix) video

We’ve told you before on Hometown Sounds about the awesomeness of Screen Vinyl Image. In DC we’re lucky that the duo has performed very frequently around town the last few months. This Friday night you have another chance to catch them live at Sova on H Street NE with locals Fell Types and Dallas’s Nervous Curtains. Earlier this month the band released a video for their remix of All Dead by label mates The Lost Rivers. Great stuff!

Miyazaki – Altar video

Listen up DC, you’ve got two chances this weekend to catch some of the best local music we’ve got currently. Saturday night I highly recommend you head over to the Red Palace on H St. NE for three very different but captivating bands: Fire & The Wheel, Ugly Purple Sweater and Dance For the Dying, who are celebrating the release of their brand new EP Puzzles for the Traveller, out October 2nd.

Tonight three great dance music bands take the stage at the Black Cat. Headliners Ra Ra Rasputin celebrate the 5 year anniversary of their late 80s synthpop vibe. Misun, the new band from Nouveau Riche‘s DJ Nacey, gives you house, nu disco and their own invention Aquawave. And openers Miyazaki describe themselves as “gloommy-spirit house, dance-synth pop”. They are putting the finishing touches on their debut album, out very soon, and this week they posted the first single, Torrents, to their Bandcamp page.

For our music video of the day, check out this video they made for the song Altar. Have a great weekend DC and enjoy the local music shows!

Empresarios – Estereolismo video

This Saturday night Vienna hotspot Jammin Java brings together a great bill of local bands with reggae, dub and latin influences. Headliners Nayas are joined by Dub City Renegades and Fort Knox Recordings artists Empresarios. Percussionist and band leader Javier Miranda leads this talented group in mixing cumbia, salsa, house and reggae to tear up dance floors all over town. Check out the video for the track Estereolismo, from their recent EP Volume.

Bonus: Empresario and DJ Sonny Cheeba recently put together the third in his DJ mix series Verano Caliente. Perfect for easing into the weekend!

Deleted Scenes – Days of Adderall video

For the last few weeks LivingSocial has hosted a live music series on Wednesday evenings at their 918 F Street special events location. Tonight they turn their attention to DC indie rock with rising stars The Sea Life and one of the more popular bands in town, Deleted Scenes. They started out releasing records on local label Sockets Records but recently re-released their latest album Young People’s Church of the Air on the New Orleans based label Park The Van. Tonight’s show is a fantastic chance to see these great bands in a close setting. Watch this fun and strange video for their track Days of Adderall.

Thievery Corporation – Is it Over? video

As I said yesterday, it’s a busy weekend for cool events happening in DC. LivingSocial sponsors a big show at the Half Street Fairgrounds featuring Gogol Bordello, Michael Franti & Spearhead, local ESL artists The Funk Ark, The Archives and Congo Sanchez, and headliners Thievery Corporation. Tickets appear to still be available, and with beautiful weather and this amazing lineup, it’s totally worth it. Today we’ve got the beautiful and strange video for the track Is It Over? from Thievery’s 2011 album Culture of Fear.

The Sea Life – Sleep (Blue Light Sessions)

There should be no chance in hell that you’ll be bored this weekend. Now that the heat is broken and everyone’s back from August recess, there is no shortage of awesome activities all over town. I’ll be dropping all my cash on minicomics and artwork at the Small Press Expo in North Bethesda, but if you aren’t a comics nerd like me you should definitely head over to the H Street Festival on Saturday. Taking over H Street NE between 8th & 14th Streets, the Festival offers 12 live performance stages, a pie eating contest, a “doggy beach” and something called “Hair Show”. You can check out some awesome local indie rock from Young Rapids, Shark Week, Teen Mom and The Sea Life, the band behind today’s featured music video. Pick Up Productions recently captured a live in-studio performance of their song Sleep, from their latest FREE self-titled EP, for the Blue Light Sessions series. Have an awesome weekend DC!

Outputmessage – Undone (Autorock Remix) video

Bernard Farley is a busy dude. In addition to fronting next-big-thing electronic dance act Volta Bureau, he also continues to perform and produce music solo as Outputmessage. Tonight he’s got a high profile gig supporting New Zeland’s Ladyhawke at the Rock & Roll Hotel, not to be missed for sure.

Another busy dude is DJ Autorock, leading the electronic group Big/Bright while also remixing lots of local bands. Today we’ve got the video for the Autorock Remix of Undone, from Outputmessage’s 2010 album Autonomous.

Justin Jones – As It Turns Out video

Have you heard of the Dupont Underground? This new project aims to convert the huge unused space underneath Dupont Circle into an arts and performance space. Tonight there’s a fundraiser for the project at the Eastern Market Main Hall. Music for the fundraiser is curated by DC Setlist, and includes Alex Minoff, Margot MacDonald and Justin Jones. The party includes raffles, portraits, DJ Todd Love Supreme and lots more. We’re hopping on the bandwagon today with Justin Jones’s music video for As It Turns Out, from his recent release Fading Light. The video by David Y. Lee captures the atmosphere of Justin’s performances, and makes for a great game of “guess the venues”.
