Don’t Stay Home This Week 12/16

Monday 12/16:
The fine gents in post-rock band Ice Out will bring all their favorite holiday hits to Clarendon’s Galaxy Hut tonight, with Tyler Garing’s experimental shoegaze-y moniker Lizard Hands opening the show.

Tuesday 12/17:
Jam bandleader Gordon Sterling organizes the final open jam at Georgetown’s Gypsy Sally’s on Tuesday night. Raise a glass and bid a sad farewell to another DC music institution that brought folks of all stripes together.

Wednesday 12/18:
Rhizome’s Wednesday night lineup offers innovative takes on the American Primitive guitar style from Pittsburgh duo Pairdown, Andy McLeod from Staunton VA and Verses RecordsDoug Kallmeyer, performing a rare moniker-less solo set of pieces written for tenor guitar a decade ago on piccolo bass.


Thursday 12/19:
Listen Local First and Justin Trawick‘s The 9 Singer-Songwriter Showcase return for their 8th annual Holiday Extravaganza show at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. The free show at 6 PM on Thursday features Daphne Eckman, Tula Pisano, Steelosoul Music, Carly Harvey, Grover, Brassie, Abigail Furr, Sara Ghebremichael, and of course Mr. Trawick himself.

Don’t Stay Home This Weekend 12/13

Friday 12/13:
Tonight #DCmusic’s dedicated photographer Roxplosion hosts another Dangerous Session of thick & heavy rawk at the Pie Shop with DC’s own Caustic Casanova and two Charm City bands, Eat The Cake and Queen Wolf.

Saturday 12/14:
The monthly showcase by feminist-representing record label This Could Go Boom! returns to the Dew Drop Inn Saturday night to present the eclectic lineup of blues singer Carly Harvey, experimental Latin rhythms from Matizwave, and Palestinian musical storyteller Huda Asfour.


Sunday 12/15:
On Sunday afternoon at 4 PM the Halcyon Arts Lab incubator hosts a listening party for HUBRI$, the long awaited new album by Grammy-nominated rapper and producer Kokayi, including a viewing of selected works from the accompanying photography series on the experience of black masculinity mediated through the lens of the story of Icarus and Daedalus.

Don’t Stay Home This Week 12/09

Monday 12/09:
Sexy vocal jazz group Veronneau return to Blues Alley tonight for their annual holiday music show “Snow Time” with two sets at 8 and 10 PM.

Tuesday 12/10:
SongByrd’s Tuesday evening offering in Adams Morgan pairs mellow indie pop band Lotion Princess with touring folk artist Sam Amidon.

Wednesday 12/11:
It’s tough to say goodbye, but groovy DC rock band Lovejet hugs it out at their farewell show Wednesday night at 7DrumCity’s The Pocket. Multi-lingual singer-songwriter Liah and folk rock band Adele Marie & The Milkweeds round out the all-DC bill.

Thursday 12/12:
Gypsy Sally’s in Georgetown carved out a dedicated niche for the funk and jam music scene, including beloved funk-rock band Albino Rhino. The clock is ticking on this venue, so catch the Rhino one last time on this stage Thursday night along with New Orleans band The Quickening.

Friday 12/06:
If you like your live music with big brass sections, Union Stage is your home base tonight with classy ska group Eastern Standard Time and Roma-influenced party animals Black Masala, with tropical DJ sets from Leon City Sounds.


Saturday 12/07:
Petworth burger bar Slash Run hosts three thoughtful and innovative bands Saturday night. Lisa Said’s group Piramid Scheme deliver psychedelic blues, Teething Veils make delightfully dark chamber-folk, and We Capillaries can only be summed up as “weirdo rock”.



Sunday 12/08:
See post-rock, post-classical, punk-influenced singer Case Graham’s solo tour as Birds For Eyes land back home in DC Sunday night at SongByrd’s Vinyl Lounge, along with Cal Rifkin and Matt Fusiek.

Tuesday 12/03:
Organized by poet and interdisciplinary artist Elena Botts, Mourning Dove makes sound art compositions of organic field recordings, experimental voice, and minimal instrumentation. Celebrate the release of their new album The Unimaginable through Etxe Records this Tuesday night at Rhizome along with Richmond’s Thin Pigeon, Human Person from Fredricksburg, and DC slowcore act A Deadly Orchestra.


Wednesday 12/04:
Wednesday night’s show at Slash Run will be the last in DC for Natasha Janfaza’s Panini Girlfriend, as she and the members of Taciturn are moving to Arizona. Catch her “punk stuff in marshmallow fluff” one last time along with Weston Smith and two touring acts, Rochester’s Roselove and Stephen Ferm from NJ.


Thursday 12/05:
We are beyond excited to present another Luce Unplugged show this Thursday! Head to the upper floor of the Smithsonian American Art Museum by 6 PM to hear newly-reformed and sounding-better-than-ever indie rock heroes Washington Social Club!

Sunday 11/24:
Spend your Sunday evening with Charlottesville chill indie pop band Stray Fossa at SongByrd’s upstairs Vinyl Lounge, with local support from LoveJet and a solo set by The North Country‘s Andrew Grossman.

Wednesday 11/20:
Still looking for a night to check out 7DrumCity‘s new live music space The Pocket? We always recommend checking out garage rock duo Venray, and they’re anchoring a night co-presented by AdMo’s SongByrd along with Nashville’s Ttotals and the mysterious Sparkle Fang.

Thursday 11/21:
Wonderland Ballroom‘s monthly ska night BlueBeat DC hits Thursday night with our punky reggae faves The Scotch Bonnets and New York’s Dunia Best of Agent 99.

Friday 11/15:
Thoughtful and mellow folk band Stranger in the Alps led off our #DCmusic podcast this week with a song from their seasonally-appropriate new EP The Days Are Over Sooner. Head to the mysterious Scooby Doo Mansion in Mt. Pleasant tonight to hear the new EP and lots more from Steve Kolowich’s band, and get there at 8 to catch opening solo sets from Bal Boheme‘s Laurel Rose and Nashville’s Scott Faw.

Saturday 11/16:
Soulful jazz vocalist Cecily brings back her Salute To DC show, featuring tunes from her transcendent 2018 album Songs of Love and Freedom and lots more, Saturday evening at the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H St. NE.

Sunday 11/17:
Warm Sun is a DC rock supergroup featuring members of The Effects, Beauty Pill, Soccer Team, and The Aquarium. Celebrate the release of their new record Hope You Always Find It Hard To Leave at the Black Cat‘s intimate Red Room Sunday evening with openers Foul Swoops.

DC9 hosts a dual benefit show tonight for two organizations supporting DC women musicians, Girls Rock! DC and Project Hera. The music starts damn early at 6:30 and includes RoseRiot, Chicago’s Scuttlebuggs, and Tabibito from Nagoya.

Wednesday 11/13:
The time grows short to see live music at Georgetown’s Gypsy Sally’s. Head there Wednesday night to see all-female folk trio Wicked Sycamore open for Pennsylvania bluegrass band Serene Green.

Thursday 11/14:
Thursday night Comet Ping Pong hosts the long awaited record release party for Matt Dowling’s sophomore album Unwound as Swoll. Blight Records mates Luna Honey and Baltimore’s Abdu Ali fill out a sweet night of dark synth music.
