Don’t Stay Home This Week 5/13

Can’t stay home and hear the finest #DCmusic live, can you.

Monday 5/13:
Legendary DC producer and Inner Ear Studio head honcho Don Zientara plays AdMo’s Songbyrd tonight, along with Lisa Said’s rock band Piramid Scheme. No cover = buy some vinyl while you’re there.

Tuesday 5/14:
Jazz saxophonist and passionate go-go supporter Elijah Jamal Balbed joins 7DrumCity‘s FREE, Live & Local series on the patio at The Pub & The People from 6-8 PM Tuesday evening. The rain’s gotta stop sometime, right?

Wednesday 5/15:
AdMo’s Bossa is well known as a DC hub of global sounds. This Wednesday they host the Tributary Project, modeled after band lead JaJa Bashengezi‘s experiences in refugee camps across east Africa.

Thursday 5/16:
Any weekly show listing wouldn’t be complete without a couple of determined young indie rock bands supporting a touring act. The Pie Shop‘s Thursday night includes DC’s Friends of Friends and Lovejet, welcoming Dominy from Philly.

Don’t Stay Home This Weekend 5/10

There’s some big shows and festivals hitting DC this weekend. We like to illuminate some more intimate #DCmusic shows worthy of your attention.

Friday 5/10:
Perhaps you heard our recent podcast takeover with Lilly from Erotic Thrillers and Javier from Spirit Plots. Devin Ocampo produced the new album by Spirit Plots, and his tight indie rock band The Effects joins Spirit Plots and Erotic Thrillers tonight at Slash Run to celebrate the ablum’s release and give away vinyl copies with every ticket!

Saturday 5/11:
The Funk Parade fills venues up and down U Street with bands Saturday night, but one lone showcase is far away from the traditional Black Broadway. Pianist and bandleader Aaron Abernathy, who we featured in our Millennium Stage series, brings a FREE taste of the funk to the Wharf’s Pearl Street Warehouse.

Sunday 5/12:
DC jazz site CapitalBop returns to Takoma Park’s Rhizome for their excellent monthly Jazz Loft series. This Sunday brings saxophonist Brian Falkowski, featured performer at Donvonte McCoy’s regular gig at 18th St Lounge, and percussionist Dan Kurfist who recently relocated here from NYC. Bring $10 for the performers and your instrument to jam into the wee hours.

Say Solos – Lose You (Tiny Desk Contest)

Kudos to WAMU’s Kojo Show for highlighting some of our area’s prominent entries to NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest. The show and accompanying post on DCist highlighted a couple that flew under our radar, including this electronic live looping wizard Say Solos. Crafting sexy downtempo jams with his smooth R&B voice backing beats from TF Woo, we hope this feature gives his music career a well-deserved boost. “Lose You” comes from the just-released EP Three Tune Kid.

We aren’t done yet with our review of DC’s finest Tiny Desk Contest entries for NPR Music. Today’s feature is Oxon Hill r&b and funk band 1 Identity. Don’t Stay Home This Week 5/06

Monday’s here, and it’s time to plan your week of hitting up live music. Here are our #DCmusic picks for the week ahead.

Monday 5/06:
Surfgazers Coral Benders, recently featured on our podcast, team up with Club Scout, powerful indie rock band featuring recent podcast guest host Javier Diaz, tonight at Slash Run. They host Baltimore’s Silent October and Minneapolis band Kiss The Tiger, touring to support their new album Let Me Bleed.

Tuesday 5/07:
The DIY spot Dwell really has captured the wayward underground house show energy in DC. Tuesday night the lineup at the red brick carriage house includes Lotion Princess, Weston Smith, Social Station and Philly’s Mavis the Dog.

Wednesday 5/08:
It takes some nerve to name your band Dentist, for obvious reasons. The touring NJ band hits the Pie Shop Wednesday night with support from two DC acts, The Countess and Olivia Mancini & The Mates.

Thursday 5/09:
Just look at this Thursday night bill at Dew Drop Inn. Bal Boheme. The Electric Grandmother. Jack On Fire. Baltimore friend Marian McLaughlin. Varied in genre, style and volume, this is quintessential and irresistible. Also, holy shit this flyer.

Humble Fire – Mad World

Let’s take a quick break from our review of Tiny Desk Contest vids to bring you the latest from dream pop band Humble Fire. Veterans of our Millennium Stage series, they follow up their gorgeous sophomore album Builder with this cover of “Mad World”, the 1982 breakout hit by Tears For Fears. The current political climate, inescapable sometimes in DC, is an obvious influence for this somber song, but Humble Fire turn up the juice for this polished, modern version. The lush music video comes from director Jen Meller, now based in NY but still a big visual contributor to DC’s music scene through collabs with Blight Records. Humble Fire celebrate this release tonight at the Pie Shop with support from Baltimore band Super City.

Born Dad – My Band Gets Me Boyfriends (Tiny Desk Contest)

Born Dad is a band full of queer musicians that just want to sing and joke about their experiences and identities. Their power move for this Tiny Desk Contest entry for NPR Music was recruiting enthusiastic go-go dancers to group house-party up the irony-dripping single “My Band Gets Me Boyfriends”. You’ll have to make it all the way through May to see Born Dad play next at Rhizome in Takoma Park on Tuesday May 28th with Gabbie Rotts and Company Calls.

EMOTiO – Meghna Chakrabarti (Tiny Desk Contest)

Progressive jazz/funk group EMOTiO prove their far-out bona fides by labelling their sound as Vegan Space Metal Bubblebath Jazz Rock&Roll&Spaghetti&Meatballs Gutter Funk. Their recent EP Live at Milkboy shows their propensity to title songs after famous and semi-famous women (“Angela Bassett”, “Jennette McCurdy”). The basement recording for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest is “Meghna Chakrabarti”, which sent us to Wikipedia to discover she is a Boston-based NPR journalist and the host of WBUR’s call-in show On Point. Shout-out to rapper AliReza for sneaking into the middle of the song and delivering rhymes straight from his phone.

Don’t Stay Home This Week 4/29

Now that we wasted so much of the weekend with Endgame and the Battle of Winterfell, how about cooling off with some live #DCmusic? Here are our picks for the week ahead.

Monday 4/29:

Get an early taste of this year’s Kingman Island Bluegrass & Folk Festival this Tuesday night at Pearl Street Warehouse. Justin Trawick‘s long-running 9 Songwriter Showcase gathers musicians playing at Saturday’s festival, including Reed Appleseed, The October Sessions, Jess Eliot Myhre of the Bumper Jacksons, and more. But first, here’s Trawick and his trio The Common Good playing a new song called “These Days” in Pearl Street’s green room for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest.

Wednesday 5/01:
GoldPants Party wins the battle of Wednesday night with superhero Emma G and feisty synthpop diva Loi Loi. Get to Sauf Haus by 8 to see Emma G’s new music video for the latest single “Smile”.
