James Wolf – Refuge

Some find the moon comforting, or majestic, but experimental violinist James Wolf is haunted by it. The middle piece of his newest collection, That, is titled “Refuge” but provides no such sanctuary in its unsettled sounds. Wolf composes ethereal soundscapes solo and also contributes to the ominous mood of post-rock band The Orchid. DC’s avant-garde label Verses Records, patron of Wolf’s first solo release on se lève from 2015, helms this release as well, with label head Dennis Kane behind this music video that begins with the moon and includes many unexplained and evocative images. Pre-order That now before its release on October 27th.

allthebestkids – dreamastr

For all its many faults, 2017 will always be remembered as the year Kusama joyously took over Instagram in DC. The Hirshhorn museum’s mega-popular exhibit of artist Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors was the #1 hot ticket of spring, and required multiple Instagram posts to fully realize the jealousy of our peers. Funky hip-pop band allthebestkids went way further and somehow managed to shoot an entire music video in the exhibit, despite the crowds and gentle prodding of event staff. Though the song “dreamastr” appears on their 2016 album Go Out With A Bang, allthebestkids could have written this as the cosmic theme song for the gorgeous and whimsical exhibit. Catch them opening for Miami band Magic City Hippies at the Black Cat on Saturday night.

Reagan Bombs – Boat

“Boat”, the second single from go-go-meets-techno project Reagan Bombs, may sound innocuous if you don’t know the slang of go-go. Boat, or love boat, refers to the mixture of PCP and marijuana, and also connoted a sub-genre of go-go from the 80s. DJ Jesse Tittsworth and filmmaker Scott Sanders provide their own version of this style in this dark and psychedelic club tune, with a subversive music video created by Sanders providing visuals for the dark trip into hallucinations. Grab their full length self-titled album on cassette or digital through local label Swedish Columbia.
