Presenting The Chuck Brown Band at the Millennium Stage

Hometown Sounds celebrates both the past and the future of #DCmusic with our April showcase at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage with the classic go-go sounds of the Chuck Brown Band!

The Chuck Brown Band toured the world with the Godfather of Go Go for the most prolific period of his life, when he had 5 Billboard charting releases and a Grammy nomination over a ten year period. They continue to honor him by carrying the torch, keeping the beat alive and keeping the party going. Chuck Brown was always known for having only the best musicians from DC in his band. This often translated into having the best musicians, period. With the addition of Frank Sirius leading the band forward on guitar and vocals, the Chuck Brown Band is arguably the Crankin’est Band on the Planet. Chuck’s daughter KK has always been a part of the show, and Chuck’s son Wiley Brown has joined the band, keeping Chuck’s “Family Affair” vibe as much a part of the band as it is a part of the relationship between the band and the audience. Digging through the vault of Chuck Brown classics from Run Joe and Go-Go Swing to more recent hits like Chuck Baby and Beautiful Life as well as new material by the band interspersed with other Go-Go hits, the Chuck Brown Band combines the best of the Godfather and the best of Go-Go in an uplifting, show stopping performance. Infusing the Godfather’s mix of jazz, funk, and soul, along with audience call and response, his legacy continues. The Chuck Brown Band has been joined on stage by Ledisi, George Clinton, Dwele, Raheem DeVaughn, Lil Mo, Doug E Fresh, and others.

The Godfather may be gone, but his legacy continues as the Chuck Brown Band carries his funky groove forward without missing a B-E-A-T. Wind Us Up, Chuck!

RSVP here and come to the free performance at 6 PM on Thursday April 26th!

Top 5 Videos of 2014 #1: Chuck Brown – Beautiful Life

It doesn’t seem that long ago, but two and a half years have passed since the untimely departure of Chuck Brown, DC’s Godfather of Go-go. His posthumous release Beautiful Life came out this past summer, and the first music video we got from it was the reflective title track. Brown’s original focus of the song is about being happy with what you’ve got, but the guest verse by Brown’s daughter KK turns it into an uplifting summation of his life and legacy as a performer and colossal cultural figure in DC. The recent passing of Mayor-for-life Marion Barry also comes to mind when watching this video, reminding us what’s changing and how much we’ve lost. This video is such a moving love letter to DC and the fans that continue to make go-go an important part of musical life here. Thanks for everything, Chuck.

Chuck Brown Band – Lighters video

The Chuck Brown Band, keepers of the legacy of DC’s Godfather of Go-Go, today dropped a brand new video from the posthumous release Beautiful Life. “Lighters” is a driving party anthem with that unmistakable beat, featuring Ms. Yendy and King Kanja imploring dancers to “Put Your Lighters Up”. The song’s lighthearted theme to keep the party going late into the night reflects Chuck Brown’s long legacy of musical achievement and has greater poignancy now that he’s gone.

Chuck Brown – Beautiful Life video

What else can be said about the Godfather of go-go and the heart of DC? Chuck Brown left us back in May 2012, but the posthumous release Beautiful Life just dropped a few weeks ago. On the album the title track features a guest spot from Wale, but the music video for the song swaps that for an emotional and uplifting verse from Chuck’s daughter KK Brown. From the streets to the clubs to the recent christening of Chuck Brown Memorial Park in Langdon Park, there’s absolutely no escaping Chuck Brown’s impact on the harmony, history and reputation of DC.

Chuck Brown videos

DC music videos of the day! We’re all still reeling from yesterday’s loss of DC go-go godfather Chuck Brown. Like a few other local radio stations, yesterday Hometown Sounds played only Chuck Brown music to honor the legend. It seems fitting to repost a couple of videos we’ve run before. The first one, Chuck Baby, comes from his 2007 album We’re About The Business.

The second, Thievery Corporation‘s song The Numbers Game, from their 2008 album Radio Retaliation, really shows how much DC loved Chuck Brown.
