Saturday night the Velvet Lounge hosts a treat for fans of electronic dance music, a live improv set (first one ever!) by Aaron Leitko and Mike Petillo, better known as Protect-U. They’ve put out a number of limited edition releases on their own Future Times label, and their most recent single Motorbike was released by Mike Paradinas’s distinguished Planet Mu label. Here’s the video for U-Uno, from their 2011 single World Music.

Oddisee feat. Olivier Daysoul – You Know Who You Are video
There’s a brand new album by hip-hop producer and MC Oddisee, on the Mello Music Group label, called People Hear What They See. Oddisee recently moved to Brooklyn from DC, but he still frequently collaborates with and remixes plenty of DC musicians. Today’s video is a bonus acoustic cut from the album, You Know Who You Are, featuring Olivier Daysoul on acoustic guitar and soulful vocals. Tonight Monserrat House hosts a FREE listening party for the new album, featuring a live band!
The Pietasters – Stone Feeling video
It’s really hot outside. But tonight the legendary DC ska band The Pietasters are playing a free outdoor show at Lee District Park in Franconia! So suck it up, drink some coconut water and go get your 90s skank on! Today’s video is Stone Feeling, from their 1997 album Willis.
Deleted Scenes – Bedbedbedbedbed video
Dreamy DC indie pop band Deleted Scenes have today’s DC music video of the day today. Last year they put out a popular album Young People’s Church Of The Air through awesome local label Sockets Records. Since then they’ve signed to Park The Van records and plan to re-release Young People’s Church Of The Air before releasing a new album next year. Check out the video for the single “Bedbedbedbedbed”.

Akua Allrich – Hard to Get video
Tonight another summer music tradition kicks off at Carter Barron Amphitheatre with the Washington Post Going Out Gurus Weekend Concerts. The Jazz Night lineup features Jess Righthand Quintet, Jolley Brothers and headliner Akua Allrich. Akua is a seasoned DC jazz performer, incorporating neo-soul and R&B influences into her music. Tonight’s show is free and requires no tickets, and the weather couldn’t be nicer! Here’s the video for Hard to Get from Akua’s 2010 album A Peace of Mine.
Mustafa Akbar – Call Me video
DC music video of the day! Mustafa Akbar a.k.a. Mustabar is well known as a frequent collaborator with just about all of the talented bands on the Fort Knox Recordings and Eighteenth Street Lounge labels. He’s also the gracious host of the annual Mustock festival at his home in Lignum, VA. His project with Rex Riddem, Nappy Riddem, plays a show tonight at Monserrat House with local ska band The Chariots. But before it all, Mustafa Akbar put out a couple of soulful solo albums, and today’s video comes from his 2009 release That Day.
Jukebox The Ghost – Victoria video
Today’s DC music video of the day comes from former locals Jukebox The Ghost. They relocated to Philadelphia a while ago but they made a big splash when they formed in DC. They just released a new fantastic new album called Safe Travels, totally deserving of your hard earned dollars. They’ll be in town to show off their new music at the 9:30 club on June 29th. Check out the video for Victoria, from their 2008 debut album Let Live & Let Ghosts.
Christylez Bacon – Reinventing Hip Hop video
Tonight is a great night to check out the Black Squirrel‘s tap room in Adams Morgan for a diverse and all-local lineup. The show features folk rocker Jules Bland, jazz performers Mark G. Meadows and Stephen Synk, and headliner Christylez Bacon, a Grammy-nominated hip-hop beatboxer who must be seen to be believed! Check out this video from last year’s TEDxPennQuarter conference and you will know what I’m talking about.

Our DC music video of the day today comes from Wale, the rapper with the highest profile in the DMV today. The song comes from Wale’s free 2010 mixtape More About Nothing, and the video features the voice of our first black President. No, not Barack Obama, of course I mean Oscar winner Morgan Freeman.

Providing the bumpin’ soundtrack to the festivities are the top tier talent on the Fort Knox Recordings label, including All Good Funk Alliance, Nappy Riddem, FK5 vs Thunderball and the Empresarios.
