Don’t Stay Home This Weekend 10/11

Friday 10/11:
Like the many varieties of sweet & savory pies on offer downstairs at the Pie Shop, different delicious flavors of pop music take the upstairs stage tonight. See The Eli Lev Collective, Nah. and Mystery Friends starting at 8 PM.

Saturday 10/12:
This past summer the trio of Ian MacKaye, Amy Farina and Joe Lally avoided adopting a name in an effort to keep their music offline and in the moment of live performance. Now they’ve settled on the name CORIKY and Saturday afternoon they help to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the DC Library’s Punk Archive initiative at the Georgetown Neighborhood Library, along with exhibitions of photography and zines and punk ephemera.

Sunday 10/13:
“Trumpeter Joseph Brotherton holds it down every Wednesday at Jojo on U Street, hosting an eclectic session that features hard-hitting groove adaptations of jazz standards alongside spoken word, Afrobeat and even stand-up comedy. Drummer Kelton Norris… is young, but you can hear him on the bandstand with giants of D.C. jazz like Michael Bowie and Allyn Johnson, executing everything from deep, Blakey-like swing to slick drum & bass grooves.” See both DC jazz musicians lead their own ensembles at CapitalBop‘s monthly Jazz Loft Sunday night at Takoma Park’s Rhizome.

DMV KARS – Walk Alone

Last Friday night 80s synthpop duo DMV KARS debuted their new music video to the assembled crowd at the long-running post-punk DJ night We Fought The Big One in Mt. Pleasant. (Hometown Sounds also DJed, perhaps you heard!) Now you can watch this vid in the comfort of your office cubicle or gym equipment. Bandmates KBUD and Josafeen Wells, last seen together in Justin Moyer’s band Edie Sedgwick, directed “Walk Alone” which dramatizes the pain of counting on flighty musicians to show up for important events. The self-titled debut EP by DMV KARS is the best $7 you can spend all day.

Peanut Butter – Slow Retreat Too

WORLD PREMIERE!

Peanut Butter, fka Peanut Butter & Dave, is the cross-country indie rock duo of Paul Bugala and David Diaz. On our #DCmusic Podcast this week we spun the catchy “Asteroid Negotiations”, the lead-off single from their almost-released new album Don’t Stop, produced by Devin Ocampo. Today we get to premiere the album’s second single “Slow Retreat Too”, with this music video from director Jon Lutz featuring an adorable tiger on a musical mystery journey through recognizable landmarks in DC and Silver Spring. Plus the drums on this track come from Renata Ocampo of Warm Sun.

Eagle-eyed fans (like us) might note that this looks identical to the video for “Asteroid Negotiations” premiered last month by the Ohio-based music blog Atlas and the Anchor. Bugala remarked, “Kind of an illustration of how viewers/listeners can create or ascribe different meanings from creative content depending on how it’s presented.”

You can pre-order the vinyl release of this album now on Bandcamp, or stop by DC area record stores Crooked Beat and Som Records to take it home now.
