Lost Philosophies – Hung Over video

Lost Philosophies, a side project for members of hard rock band Fight The Lion, is a band devoted to beer. They write songs about beer, their videos feature lots of delicious craft beer, and sometimes beer even provides their creative spark. This video for Hung Over, from their recent Art Institute of Washington recording sessions, is a tribute to having a good time with your friends, filming it and possibly regretting the whole thing later.

Asheru – Clay Davis video

There are a lot of great rappers in DC, but my favorite is Asheru. His flow is steady, confident and witty, and his collaborations with Fort Knox Five and The Funk Ark show how deeply he knows and loves DC. He’s just as committed to educating youth as a teacher as he is to music and performing. This brand new video for Clay Davis comes from a FREE new mixtape called I.K.L.A. Radio Vol. 1 (Internationally Known Locally Accepted) mixed by DJ Dirty Ice and featuring Kingpen Slim, Omar Retnu and others from the DMV. And if you don’t know who Clay Davis is, add this to your Christmas list.

Drop Electric – Bones Beneath the Bridges video

The folks in DC’s soundscape ensemble Drop Electric have had a fantastic year, gaining quite a bit of popularity and acclaim for their live sets and their four song EP released this past summer. Tonight they headline a sold out show at LivingSocial’s 918 F Street space, so I hope you got tickets if you are a fan! Here’s another video from their FREE debut album Finding Color In The Ashes, for the song Bones Beneath The Bridges. It’s black for about 35 seconds in the beginning, so stick with it.

SOJA – Everything Changes video

Reggae veterans SOJA just released a brand new video for their uplifting song Everything Changes, featuring Marcelo Falcão of O Rappa on vocals, from their most recent album Strength To Survive. Filmed last month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, it’s great to see these guys getting mad love all over the world.

Vandaveer – Spite video

It’s a great day when we’re blessed with another video by Vandaveer. The duo of Mark Charles Heidinger and Rose Guerin have made amazing folk music together over the course of three full length albums, with a fourth, “Oh, Willie Please…”, due out in early 2013. They are dynamic and captivating performers on stage and you really should catch them headline at Iota on Sunday December 9th. Check out the video for Spite, from their 2011 album Dig Down Deep, which I think was perhaps subtly influenced by The Incredible Hulk.

Kingpen Slim – The Haunting video

Adams Morgan rapper Kingpen Slim turned a lot of ears his way with his recent free mixtape Triple Beam Dreams. Yesterday Slim released the latest video from the mixtape, The Haunting. The serious and bleak video, featuring clips from classic films Menace II Society and New Jack City, provides quite a contrast from Slim’s previous fun & raunchy video Lollipop.

Drew Gibson – We Move By Wagon Train video

Late last year local singer-songwriter Drew Gibson released his second album The Southern Draw. We recently featured the first video from the album, I Know I Miss You More, which was a low-budget DIY production. Now Drew has just released his second music video, for We Move By Wagon Train, finally receiving the beautiful visuals his music deserves.

Bonus: Behind the scenes featurette!

Astra Via – Push/Pull video

Staying in town this Thanksgiving weekend? DC9 has a great all-local lineup on Saturday night with Addieville, Derek Evry & His Band of Misanthropes, and headliners Astra Via. We told you before about this great pairing of long time DC musicians Jarret Nicolay and Olivia Mancini. Today we’ve got another well-shot live performance captured by the folks at Pick Up Productions for their Blue Light Sessions series. Push/Pull comes from Astra Via’s FREE debut EP Folie à Deux. Happy Thanksgiving DC!

Batala – Hey! video

I am a huge marching band nerd. For seven years I played quads, in high school and college, and I’d probably keep doing it if I could. And I am more than a bit jealous of how much fun Batala has at their shows. The all-women ensemble, playing Afro-Brazilian and Samba-Reggae rhythms, seems to pop up everywhere around town, at parades, festivals and even Fort Reno. They recently made a video for the 48 Hour Film Project‘s DC competition that won “Best/Most Drums”, a category that has my full support.
