Free Lobster Buffet – Perfect Girl video

Thanks to Frankenstorm Sandy, we’ve all been cooped up inside for days now, and just about all Monday night shows got canned. If you are dying for some live music tonight, unfortunately some of tonight’s lineups got postponed due to travel problems. But as of now the Red Palace plans to bring local ska band Free Lobster Buffet to the stage tonight to provide the soundtrack for your drunken Sandy stories. Check out this video for Perfect Girl, get out of your house tonight and rock out!

Screen Vinyl Image – Cathode Ray video

I imagine most fans of DC music have been to Arlington’s Galaxy Hut by now. The hip and small bar long ago skipped on hard liquor to focus on an amazing beer selection, presaging DC’s intense love affair with brews micro and local. But did you know that Galaxy Hut opened a sister bar on Route 7 in Falls Church called Spacebar? Recently the new bar has begun to host shows on Sunday evenings, charging only a $5 cover just like the original Hut. This Sunday the amazing noisy electronic duo Screen Vinyl Image brings their high intensity live show to Spacebar, and there is clearly no better reason to journey out to Falls Church. Here’s the video for Cathode Ray, from their 2009 album Interceptors.

Drop Electric – We Will Be Humans Finally video

DC, this Friday night you’ve got another chance to check out Drop Electric, the shoegaze noise ensemble that’s caught the attention of many this year. Sasha Lord has included them in a great lineup at Comet Ping Pong with the sassy Coup Sauvage & The Snips and headliners Thieves Like Us from Berlin. Drop Electric recently blew the lid off the 9:30 club opening for Papadosio, so seeing them in a tight space like Comet will be insane (don’t forget your earplugs!). Today we’ve got a short but sweet video for We Will Be Humans Finally, from their FREE debut album Finding Color In The Ashes.

Nadastrom – Save Us video

Tonight is the 19th edition of U Street Music Hall’s monthly Moombahton Massive party, bringing DJs Sabo, Melo, J-Boogie and Nadastrom to the decks at 108 BPM. Nadastrom, the duo of Dave Nada and Matt Nordstrom, now reside in LA but frequently return to DC to promote the latest electronic dance music subgenre they created. Come hungry, as always Mama Nada’s empenadas are available all night long. For today’s DC music video of the day, we’re going back pre-Moombahton to Nadastrom’s 2009 banger Save Us.

Astra Via – Fame video

Pop duo Astra Via is a local music “supergroup” of Jarrett Nicolay, founding member of Virginia Coalition, and Olivia Mancini, from Washington Social Club and The Housemates, which add up to more than the already substantial component parts. This is the stuff that should be capturing everyone’s hearts on FM radio across the country. The band created a really fun video for the lead-off track Fame, from their FREE debut EP Folie à Deux, inspired by the game Operation.

Catch Olivia with her band The Mates Friday night at the Red Palace on H Street NE!

Star FK Radium – Solitude Rotation video

I had to chuckle when I first saw the band name Star FK Radium. It’s a great spoonerism that only people in this area would get. They are an all instrumental ensemble, haunting and melancholy and always beautiful. Tonight they’ll be playing an intimate show at Arlington’s Galaxy Hut with instrumental post-rock ensemble Falcon Arrow from Minneapolis. Check out the video for Solitude Rotation, the title track from their recently released album.

The North Country – It’s Done video

Psychedelic folk rock band The North Country celebrates the release of their debut album You Can Never Go Home Again this Saturday night at the Black Cat. The fantastic all-local bill includes SweetBread Jim’s and The Sea Life, also releasing their debut full length album at the show. Today’s music video of the day, for the song It’s Done, was filmed at house venue Paperhaus back in June, so if you were there, you might be in this video!

The Love Load – The Human Resourceful video

DC power trio The Love Load headlines a show Friday night at Velvet Lounge that includes two acts I missed out on at STPPFest last weekend, Sister Ex and G.U.T.S. The Love Load includes Dischord alum Ben Azzara on drums and Ted Watts, formerly of Pup Tent and many other groups, writing and singing the songs. You can detect the influences of Mission of Burma and The Kinks in their recently released EP Three On A Match, soon to come on 7″ vinyl. Today we’ve got the video for The Human Resourceful, the title track from their 2010 debut EP.

Beautiful Swimmers – O Yea video

Beautiful Swimmers, the duo of Ari Goldman and Andrew Field-Pickering, make dance floor music that veers towards the abstract but still maintains the beat and vibe. This Friday night they’ll be throwing down tunes in advance of Oslo’s Lindstrøm for Red Fridays and Blisspop at DC’s mecca of great dance music, U Street Music Hall. Today we’ve got the video for O Yea, which features beautiful exercising ladies who don’t mind at all being trapped in an 80s video special effects machine.

Just a few days ago they released an hour long DJ mix called Loose Control on SoundCloud, with some secret unreleased gems soon to appear on their label Future Times. Don’t miss this show!

Tiffany Thompson – Let It Break Through

Local singer songwriter Tiffany Thompson is helping kick off this weekend’s Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie Music Festival, bringing an immense number of bands to the U Street, Adams Morgan and Shaw neighborhoods. Tiffany’s sweet voice and friendly stage presence, backed by her trio, open the night for fellow locals Wytold and the Adrian Krygowski Trio. Columbia Station in Adams Morgan is all ages until 11 PM, so expect a sonic shift from young punks Ladle Fight and The Black Sparks to the much more thoughtful and mellow Tiffany Thompson Trio. STPPFest is all about turning you on to surprising new sounds. See you this weekend at the festival!
