Chopteeth – Traitors of Africa live video

I don’t often feature a live video for the DC Music Video of the day, but Chopteeth are too good to ignore. This huge 12 piece ensemble plays infectuous Afrobeat music, and you cannot help but dance at one of their powerful live shows. If you’ve never seen them play, your next chance is Saturday night at the Artisphere in Rosslyn, with an opening set by local latin reggae band Nayas. Here’s a taste of the Chopteeth magic, a rendition of Femi Kuti’s Traitors of Africa performed at the Rock & Roll Hotel last year, featuring Funk Ark leader Will Rast on keys.

See-I – Dinner of Herb (Zeb Remix)

Speaking of awesome new U Street hotspot Tropicalia, Friday night the dub/funk band See-I, longtime Wednesday night residents at 18th Street Lounge, brings their well-polished live show to the subterranean club. Resident DJs Sol-Power All Stars provide turntable support. Legendary producer Zeb has crafted a new remix of a See-I track from deep in the vaults, 2004’s Dinner of Herb, and they’ve released this track as a free download.

Drop Electric – Bones Beneath the Bridges video

The folks in DC’s soundscape ensemble Drop Electric have had a fantastic year, gaining quite a bit of popularity and acclaim for their live sets and their four song EP released this past summer. Tonight they headline a sold out show at LivingSocial’s 918 F Street space, so I hope you got tickets if you are a fan! Here’s another video from their FREE debut album Finding Color In The Ashes, for the song Bones Beneath The Bridges. It’s black for about 35 seconds in the beginning, so stick with it.

Astra Via – Push/Pull video

Staying in town this Thanksgiving weekend? DC9 has a great all-local lineup on Saturday night with Addieville, Derek Evry & His Band of Misanthropes, and headliners Astra Via. We told you before about this great pairing of long time DC musicians Jarret Nicolay and Olivia Mancini. Today we’ve got another well-shot live performance captured by the folks at Pick Up Productions for their Blue Light Sessions series. Push/Pull comes from Astra Via’s FREE debut EP Folie à Deux. Happy Thanksgiving DC!

Live Show Simulcast feat. Watermelon

As if doing a band interview podcast wasn’t crazy enough, this week I’ll be doing my first live show simulcast Wednesday evening the 21st at the Velvet Lounge. The solid lineup includes Molly Hagen, Rich Mahogany, and DC/NY funk band Watermelon. And since it’s the night before Thanksgiving, they’re doing a canned food drive to benefit Martha’s Table. The show’s only $5, so come out if you can! But if you’re traveling or otherwise snug at home that night, tune into the Hometown Sounds stream via iTunes, the free TuneIn app for iPhone and Android, or on our website!

Drew Gibson – I Know I Miss You More video

There are lots of great local shows to take in this weekend, but if you are in the mood for some fantastic roots rock then head to Iota in Arlington for Wes Tucker‘s album release party with his band The Skillets. I’ve heard the album and it’s a solid and catchy listen. Get there early to check out fellow locals The Reserves and Drew Gibson. A few months ago Drew released a music video for his song I Know I Miss You More, from his second album The Southern Draw. The whole video was shot on an iPhone, but it works well with the song.
