Marian McLaughlin – Grayson Highlands

Everyone knows that autumn is the best time to get the hell out of DC and hike up some mountains. Let experimental folk singer Marian McLaughlin be your travel guide on the new music video for her song “Grayson Highlands”, from her soon to be released album Accotink. The Grayson Highlands State Park is located in southeast Virginia, and contains a small portion of the famed Appalachian Trail. Marian and videographer Vianney Paul camped and hiked around this beautiful area and delivered this uncomplicated and peaceful video to accompany her wistful song about serenity in nature, with arrangements by Ethan Foote. McLaughlin and her trio depart on their first ever UK tour tomorrow, but she promises a DC area performance on November 22nd at the Moishe House in Columbia Heights with Audrey Harrer.

Marian McLaughlin – Your Bower video

The push is on to realize Marian McLaughlin‘s dreams to independently produce her second album Spirit House. The classical guitarist and experimental folk pioneer has 8 days left on her Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to record, mix, master and distribute her new collection of songs with string arrangements by longtime collaborator Ethan Foote. 2014 was a breakout year for Marian, with a gorgeous music video for “Before You Leave” and the prestige of a Tiny Desk Concert. With the help of her generous fans, even more success is possible in 2015.

On today’s episode 94 of the Chunky Glasses podcast, our good friend Kevin sat down for an illuminating talk with Marian. Hometown Sounds gets in on the Marian McLaughlin action today by showing you this intimate live performance of new song “Your Bower”, captured by ATV Beats, a video collective at American University. Use the Kickstarter to pre-order the album or help patronize the arts by contributing more!

Marian McLaughlin – Before You Leave video

Marian McLaughlin has a refreshingly abstract take on folk music. The “dérive” technique she’s developed over the last few years involves a more subconscious and improvisational take on creating music. Marian’s debut release, an 8 song EP called Dérive, comes out January 15th, and she recently released a music video for the song “Before You Leave”. Zambia, the video’s director, captured the moody spirit of the song perfectly in the visuals. For more background, check out All Songs Considered’s recent First Watch post.
