All Good Funk Alliance – Slingshot Boogie video

DC music video of the day! To many, Memorial Day is a time for BBQs and tubing trips on the Potomac, but in the city the annual tradition I love most is the Fort Knox Recordings takeover parties at U Street Music Hall. This year’s Funk 4 Peace throwdown Sunday night involves the Godfather of Hip-Hop Afrika Bambaataa, reggae rockers Nappy Riddem, an always awesome Fort Knox Five DJ set, and the debut live performance for long time dance party veterans All Good Funk Alliance. FKR just released the AGFA album Jacks of All Trades, and they are so excited about this record that they are giving it away at the club! Today we’ve got the video for the title track from AGFA’s 2009 EP Slingshot Boogie, on their own Funk Weapons label, featuring rhymes from Think Tank.

Vandaveer & SOJA videos

DC music videos of the day! Two great local shows tonight deserve a double video feature on Hometown Sounds. First up is folk troubadors Vandaveer, part of a truly fantastic lineup tonight at the Black Cat with fellow locals The Beanstalk Library and Astra Via (Olivia Mancini from Washington Social Club and Jarrett Nicolay of Virginia Coalition). Their song The Great Gray comes from Vandaveer’s 2011 album Dig Down Deep.

The second video comes from the extremely popular reggae band Soldiers of Jah Army a.k.a. SOJA. They’ve worked hard over a long 15 year career to build a die-hard fan base that’s clearly shown in two sold-out shows at the 9:30 Club this weekend. Today’s video is the title track from their current album Strength To Survive.

DC music video of the day! WAMMIE award winning Lucky Dub is the perfect summertime music, easygoing singalong reggae rock. The video for Easy, from their 2011 debut album Mindset (on sale for only $1!) takes us to Ocean City and gets me excited for the good times of summer. SweetBread Jim’s – The Molecule Song video

DC music video of the day! Americana rockers SweetBread Jim’s headlines an all-local bill tonight at the Red Palace on H St. NE with Benny and Jeff Martini and the 1,2 Soul Revue. This trio has built their fanbase over the past couple of years and unleashed them to earn the Band of the Month spot in March by the online Deli Magazine. Sam Cooper’s Bandcamp page has a lot of EPs and albums for you to peruse, and most of them are available for free! Sam’s 2010 album Red Horses is the source for today’s video, the melancholy ballad False Dawn.

Cinco de Sandra party

Shameless self promotion! Saturday night some good friends are throwing a party called Cinco de Sandra. The aforementioned Sandra is Sandra Beasley, a DC poet whose collection titled I Was The Jukebox won the 2009 Barnard Women Poets Prize, and Saturday is her birthday. Joining her in presenting their artistic work are creators Jim Dougan, Molly Lawless, Tony Mancus, Jennifer Tress, Natalie E. Illum and the force of nature that is Mr. Dean Haspiel, probably best known outside of the comics world as the artist of the title sequence of the HBO show Bored To Death. In addition to all that awesomeness, DJ P.Vo (that’s me!) will be spinning some tunes, mostly from the Hometown Sounds library (but I can’t rule out a fun mashup or two). It’s hosted by Brandon Weatherbee of the talk show You, Me, Them, Everything, and it all goes down at the Hillyer Art Space in Dupont Circle starting at 8 PM. So ditch the margaritas and mariachi music and come party with a bunch of crazy artist types!

The Cornel West Theory – Jeffrey (snippet)

DC music video of the day! Today we’ve got a short preview of a soon-to-be-released jam from The Cornel West Theory, rappers with something to say. The tents of Occupy DC form the backdrop of the video. This snippet of Jeffrey gets me excited about their upcoming release The Bottom (hopefully soon!). Saturday night they headline a big show at the Black Cat mainstage, with support from fellow local rappers ACME.

Tom McBride – A Brief Head Spin video

DC music video of the day! Tom McBride put out a successful album fronting his band The Whig Party before deciding to go stripped down and solo for his latest record, A Brief Head Spin. The singer-songwriter teamed up with Sean Greenhalgh from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah to produce the collection of Americana-influenced songs. This Saturday night McBride plays a very high profile show at DC9, opening for The Honey Brothers, featuring Adrian Grenier from Entourage on drums (sellout warning!). The debut video from McBride’s solo album, for the title track, is simple and somewhat amateur, but the long shots looking out a car window fit well with the mellow sound of the song, and must speak closely to the life of a touring musician.

Mary Alouette – Blue Drag video

DC music video of the day! Mary Alouette is a musician on track to make some serious waves. She combines the gypsy jazz influence of Django Reinhardt with some modern electronic stylings to create something classic and yet completely fresh. You can see her live tonight at the Mansion at Strathmore as part of the Artist In Residence series. Today’s video for the song Blue Drag comes from her about-to-be-released EP Midas.
