Singer-songwriter Gideon Grove, formerly of the local rock band Zelos, just released the music video for Smoking Gun, the debut single from his recent full length solo album Wildfires. Smoking Gun has an upbeat modern rock vibe that’s catchy and easy to sing along with. Your next chance to sing along live is this Saturday night at Vienna’s Jammin’ Java, opening for Nashville based Leagues.
Local indie rock band Paperhaus lives in a happy little house called Paperhaus, one of the more popular house venues in town. The show I saw there last Friday night featuring Honest Haloway, Watermelon and Slow Machete, while stylistically all over the place, was a packed and sweaty fun party, even after the visit from law enforcement and subsequent volume reduction. The band leaves for an extended tour soon, so shows there will pause for a while. All the more reason to check out tonight’s show featuring two pop bands from Pittsburgh, Donora and TeamMate, and keytar-rocking locals Dance For The Dying. The show’s free, but bring a few bucks to help the out of towners with gas money. Here’s a great live version of D4TD’s Mannequin, the lead single from last year’s Puzzles For The Traveler EP, courtesy of Pick Up Productions’ Blue Light Sessions.
Grammy nominated singer Carolyn Malachi performs an intimate show tonight at Busboys & Poets (5th & K) with guitarist Brock Smith at 7 PM. Recently she released a music video for Free Your Mind, from her upcoming release Gold, telling the story of a struggling young dancer. The song melds influences from R&B, rap and electronic dance music, proving the versatility of this seasoned performer with a heart as big as her talent.
Tonight Iota hosts the release party for DJ Booth, the new album by Alex Vans & The Hide Away. The powerpop rock record, funded by fans on Kickstarter, just saw its first music video release earlier this week, for the catchy track Chase the Night. After extensive touring and performing, these guys definitely put on a great show. Don’t miss openers Low Cut Connie and The WeatherVanes too!
Jon H is the ringleader of Fort Knox Five, the flagship dance act on the mighty Fort Knox Recordings label. Today happens to be this party captain’s birthday, so everybody’s celebrating at new U Street hotspot Tropicalia. In addition to an epic DJ set by FK5, globetrotting DJ Vadim spins what’s sure to be an eclectic and mind-blowing mix spanning everything from hip hop to glitch to future beats. If you name your band New Rock Church of Fire, you’d better rock pretty hard. Luckily these guys never disappoint, recently coming off a quiet period with new material and shows. Be prepared Friday night for a sweaty fun show as NRCoF opens for Dream Girl Garage band SISU featuring Sandra of Dum Dum Girls at the always interesting Sasha Lord curated back room of Comet Ping Pong. Today’s video for The Maine does not come from their 2009 debut album Of The Wild, but you can snag it for free download at their SoundCloud page, for now!
Singer songwriter Justin Jonesinvites a bunch of his talented friends to perform with him at Iota in Clarendon tonight, including Chaim Rubenstein, Laura Tsaggaris, Shannon Carey of Luray, his fellow Deadman Josh Read, and Mark Charles Heidinger of Vandaveer. With a stellar lineup like that, how can you refuse? Here’s the video for the title track to Justin’s 2010 EP Little Fox, on 9:30 Records.
To keep things fresh, new venue 9th & Beats tonight pairs a movie with a great lineup of bands. Come at 7:30 to see the new Grindhouse flick Alpha Girls and stay to rock out with The Nighttime Adventure Society, Southwork and Humble Fire, all for only $5! Fronted by Laura Zax, The Nighttime Adventure Society is one of our fave new bands. Here’s the video for Doctor, Doctor from Laura’s earlier solo work.
The most interesting inauguration party this weekend is definitely M Central, a big arts festival and bash at a pop-up gallery space at 700 H Street NE. It’s organized by the No Kings Collective and the New America Foundation, with music presented by my friends at Listen Local First. Sunday night’s Inauguration Eve party features local heavyweights US Royalty and Shark Week, joined by The Dig and Low Cut Connie with DJ sets by Soul Call Paul. Get $20 advance tix at Eventbrite, because you know this party will sell out at the door if not before! Check out the always informative CityPaper for more details.
The Fort Knox Recordings guys like throwing big takeover parties at U Street Music Hall on holiday weekends, and the inauguration this weekend takes it to the next level. The local FKR gang of Empresarios, Nappy Riddem, All Good Funk Alliance and Fort Knox Five is joined by DJ Nu-Mark, well known scratching innovator, producer for Jurassic 5 and frequent collaborator with DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist. The huge assortment of DJ talent assembled is mind blowing! For extra hype, Fort Knox Five created another “Remint”, this time remixing 60s classic “For What It’s Worth” by Buffalo Springfield.
